Geert van Istendael stelde nadrukkelijk, zonder zijn land te willen ophemelen of afbreken, dat de Belgen van de wanstaltigheid een deugd hebben gemaakt en in hun moeizame chaos een labyrintische ordenin…g hebben aangebracht. Het Belgisch labyrint, dat herdruk op herdruk beleefde, leek het definitieve boek over Belgi? Maar dat vond van Istendael zelf al geruime tijd niet meer het geval. Sedert 1989 is Europa radicaal veranderd. Van Istendael voelde de noodzaak zijn visie op Belgi? in het herziene licht te zetten van het veranderde Europa. En bovendien, ook Belgi? zelf is sedert 1989 grondig veranderd. In 1991 brak extreem-rechts massaal door en tekende zich het verval af van de christen-democraten. Bovendien koerste het land af op een onontkoombare federalisering. Het woord 'separatisme' baande zich een weg vanuit het rechts-extreme kamp naar het centrum van het politieke debat. Van Istendael vraagt zich in zijn inleiding af of deze volledig herziene, geactualiseerde editie niet ooit een geschiedenisboek zal blijken te zijn van het voorbije feit Belgi.T?t slot concludeert hij: 'Herhaaldelijk maak ik me in dit boek razend kwaad op mijn land, op zijn sufheid, zijn gedweeheid, zijn bekrompenheid.
