4° (25 x 19.5 x 4 cm). 3 Bll., 920 SS. Schriftsatz in 7-Punkt Fraktur, Druck a. leichtem Mattpapier (Holzschliff). Etliche Tafeln, zahlreiche Textillustrationen wohl in/nach Holzstichen (Xylographien). OLn. (dunkelgrün, lamin.) mit versilb. (R-) Titel, schwarzem (-)Dekor u. farb. Deckelbild, floral gemusterte Vorsätze, alls. Schnitt in buntem Netzmarmor. Seiten gebräunt u. vereinzelt wenig (stock-) fleckig. Alters- u. Lagerungs-, weniger eigentliche Gebrauchsspuren. Gesamthaft weitestgehend sauberes, recht gutes Exemplar. - - Englische Originalausgabe 1887 in 2 vol. u.d.T.: The Holy Land and the Bible. A book of Scripture illustrations gathered in Palestine (London, Cassell & Co.; Brit. Namenregister. -- John Cunningham Geikie (1824-1906), "enjoyed a wide reputation as a writer of popular books on biblical and religious subjects. [.] His chief writings dealt on orthodox lines with historical and practical rather than with theological themes. [.] He was deeply interested in the exploration of Palestine under the direction of Claude Reignier Conder [.], and several visits to the country supplied him with material for 'The Holy Land and the Bible [ec.]' (2 vols. 1887; abridged edit. 1903)." Cambridge, the University Press, 1909. 8vo (18.6 x 12.4 cm). 91 pp. Original red buckram with gilt title on the front board and spine. In transparent sleeve. = This work by the Scottish geologist and president of the Royal Society Sir Archibald Geikie (1835-1924) is the full text of "The Rede Lecture. Given at the Darwin Centennial Commemoration on 24 June 1909.". The first 64 pages contain the actual lecture; the following pages contain 59 notes in smaller printing. The importance of Darwin as a geologist is overshadowed by his contributions to evolution, but Geikie shows that Darwin was one of the greatest British geologists too. Geikie and Darwin were friends. Excerpts of letters by Darwin were used by Geikie in his "Prehistoric Europe, a geological sketch" (1881), see Freeman. Slight foxing to the endpapers, otherwise a near mint copy. Freeman, 1351.
