Israel Union List) - Die etwas aufwendiger ausgestatteten 'Bildergrüße' von 1896 ff. erschienen in min. grösserem Format (ca. 26.5 x 21 cm), doch fällt das vorliegende Exemplar der 'Volksausgabe' demgegenüber nicht wesentlich ab. - "Ich habe Palästina mit der Absicht durchwandert, für die heiligen Schriften anschauliches Verständnis zu gewinnen, indem ich seine Hügel und Thäler, Flüsse und Seen, Ebenen und Gebirge, Pflanzen und Tiere, seinen Himmel und Erdboden kennen lernte, vor allem aber die Bilder aus dem Altertume beobachtete, wie sie sich heute noch überall im täglichen Leben wiederspiegeln [sic]. [.] An Ort und Stelle habe ich mir die gegebenen Verhältnisse zum Aufschluß über die ehemalige Lage der Stätten dienen lassen [.]. The importance of Darwin as a geologist is overshadowed by his contributions to evolution, but Geikie shows that Darwin was one of the greatest British geologists too. Geikie and Darwin were friends.
