However, compelling concern with the seriously disorganized family on the part of the community and the social work profession has recently been emphasized by results of systematic research into the phenomenon, both here and abroad. Proceeding from a major clarification of working terminology and an examination of pertinent historical and research background, the authors define and test their conceptual basis of identifying and measuring family disorganization. "The main theme of this study," they state, "is the development of knowledge which may lead to an early identification of the multi-problem family"-thus increasing the possibilities for alleviation or prevention. Profiles reflect family functioning rather than individual personalities-an aspect which lends itself more precisely to the systematic evaluation advanced here in preference to reliance on available administrative data from specific unrelated programs. The utility of this conceptual approach is effectively demonstrated by direct application to a sample of 300 households in a low-income public housing project in New Haven. Comparison of disorganized families with stable families reveals distinctive patterns of performance confirming the feasibility of early detection of multi-problem behavior. At the same time it points up the complexity of such situations, which are not rooted solely in poverty; it also discloses the magnitude of inadequate intra-familial relationships as opposed to social role performance.
