[short split at top front gutter, otherwise a good sound copy with only light shelfwear; the jacket is somewhat faded along the spine, with small tears at the upper spine extremities, light surface scuffing and a touch of wear along the top edge]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the book's subject on the front endpaper: "To _______ and / _____: I'm happy to share my / happiness, joy and fun / with you / Warmest regards, / Uncle Ambrogio / 10-7-75"; with an additional gift inscription in another hand, dated Christmas 1975. "A series of wildly funny, deeply moving letters written by an eighty-one-year-old Italian immigrant whose amusing use of the English language (self-taught) is more than offset by an acuity of vision and thought. Uncle Ambrogio came to America in 1912 at the age of eighteen. His formal education ended at the third grade in Italy, and when he reached adulthood he began a self-improvement crusade that is still going on at age eighty-one." The letters were written to his niece, Gina (Gene Horwitz), who collected them in this volume. At-sa some funny stoff. ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience."
