(23 May 1877) He thanks his correspondent for showing his drawings to Messrs Daldy, [publishers] adding, "I presume the drawings would not all [underlined] be required very [underlined] soon. I am rather pressed for time just now." B. (3 Aug. 1877) "[.] I shall be happy to work a little on the drwing, to give it a little more appearance of snow, if you think it advisable. I am going out of town early tomorrow morning, but I shall be back in a few days, or if you prefer to send the drawing to me in the country , my address will be [.]". C. (28 Sept.1877) "[.] I have not yet seen Cassell's Mag[azine] for Oct[ober] but I do not think it is at all likely I shall like the engraving better than those you have done. I shall be sending a drawing to them on the 9th. and I will send them a line with it suggesting that you have the block." D. (17 Oct. 1877) "I return proof. I have very little touching to suggest. I like the engraving very much.".

Telling the story of the 'Wallingford Belles', beginning with the family of 'Thomas Clark [.] landlord of the Lamb Hotel, formerly called the Bell' When Grant visits him the following summer he will give him 'lessons in painting & as much Lawn Tennis as you like and there is no end to the Archaeology of the neighbourhood'. TWO: 23 December [1883]. 4pp., 12mo. He begins by offering to aid Grant's researchehs by search the parish registers. He states that he is 'very fond of birds & natural history generally', and was interested in the 'account of your dear father & the moor hen'. He describes the birds he sees when he looks out of the window, and that when he is gardening 'they follow me about like little dogs - & all very pleased to be spoken to'.

Printed on a piece of 14 x 9.5 cm india paper, laid down on a piece of 17 x 11.5 cm card, with rounded edges, good condition. Printed at the head of the card is 'R. LEHMANN'S PORTRAIT STUDIES.' And at the foot: 'G.F. WATTS | FRED. BRUCKMANN, LONDON, | 17 Southampton Street, Strand.' Beneath the image, in small type: 'Lehmann del.' and 'Registered.' Lehmann was born in Hamburg and moved to London in 1866. He wrote two books.
