In 1739, Joanna Stephens was paid ÃâãÃâã5000 by the British Government for a recipe to cure bladder stones, a fabulous amount of money at that time, equivalent to around ÃâãÃâã650,000 today. The medicines were a powder, decoction, and pills. The powder consisted of egg shells and snails, both calcined. The decoction was made by boiling some herbs together with a ball which consisted of soap, swineÃâãÃâãÃâãs cresses burnt to a blackness, and honey in water. The pills consisted of snails calcined, wild carrot seeds, burdock feeds, ashen keys, hips and hawes, all burnt to a blackness, with soap and honey. Size: Folio (approx A4 size).
