Author's Illustrated Edition. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington. 1876, Author's Copyright Edition. Early British, 6 plates (including frontispiece, complete), 192 p + 16 p adverts, decorated cloth binding measuring 7.5 x 5", 8vo. In poor condition. As is. Illustrated cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine collapsed & worn. Gilt lettering on front board overall bright and clean; gilt lettering on spine moderately dulled and soiled. All edges of text-block are gilt (dulled). Front and rear gutters split with exposed binding. Water or tea dampness staining found on front and rear paste-downs and end-pages; mostly likely the cause of foxing throughout text-block. Top corner of plate adjacent to page 31 lacking. Toning and some age-staining present. Binding is intact, but very fragile. Perfect candidate for restoration. Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well documented, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington were one of the most prolific publishers of Jules Verne in the English language. They were an "authorized" publisher, being given that title by J Hetzel et Cie. They published numerous editions and sets of Jules Verne books. Author's copyright/illustrated edition. Hardcover. Octavo, xvi, 315 pages. In Good minus condition. Spine is green with gilt lettering and inlay. Boards are bound in same green cloth, and show moderate shelf and edge wear. Boards are somewhat loose as a result of splitting at hinges. Fraying to head and tail of spine. Mild bumping to fore corners, with exposed board at top corner of front board. Spine is cocked. Text block shows age toning throughout, heaviest on edges. Moderate shelf wear to edges of text block, with small stain on bottom edge. Adhesive staining on endpapers, with splitting to hinges resulting in looseness to boards. Front flyleaf is missing; first free endpaper somewhat loose. Dark stain at top of front hinge. Dark foxing on title page plateguard, which appears more lightly on plate and title page. Shelved in Case 8. 1400236. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. First Illustrated American Edition, Second Printing.
