Fragile spine worn with some slight loss, and split along the lower front edge, but largely intact. Pages slightly creased at the top corner. Printed on paper that is noticeably thinner than the pre-war and later post-war issues, due to post-war economy paper rationing. Contents very good. 215mm x 140mm. 70 pages [pp.290-360], including three pages of period adverts. ***An early post-war issue of this literary journal, published by Cyril Connolly as editor, and Stephen Spender as associate editor. This issue includes articles and poems by the following writers: George Barker, William Empson, Herbert Read, John Pudney, Louis Macneice, Allen Tate and Geoffrey Grigson. ***A very good copy of this 1930s literary magazine, including the poem "On Hearing a Legend Played on the Viola" by Herbert Read. Also includes the poem "The Meaning of Life" by Allen Tate, who first published his poetry the year before in 1932. ***This important literary magazine helped to establish the reputation of the more favoured poets of the thirties, notably Auden, Spender and Macneice, as well as bringing to the fore many of the then little known or unknown writers. Although mainly a vehicle for English poets and critics, the American Scene was also represented. Vol.2, No.8 - the eighth issue in the original series of the historic Poetry magazine, designed and edited by Tambimuttu, with the Henry Moore designed colour cover illustration of The Lyre Bird. This is an exceptional copy in virtually fine condition - a very rare wartime survivor. ***Near fine in the original colour illustrated stapled card covers. The covers are exceptionally clean, even the white back cover. Light creasing to the bottom corner tips of the last few pages. Slight splitting to the paper at the top of the spine. Staples rusted as usual. Internally also near fine - pages clean with hardly any of the usual foxing. A few marks and light creases - mainly production creasing as very thin paper was used (wartime paper restrictions were in force). No tears. The centre-spread of illustrations is printed on higher quality cartridge paper.
