Their ancestors settled in what is now Nova Scotia in the early 17th century, but in 1755 were forcible removed from their ancestral Acadie by the British and dispersed among the British colonies in America where they were kept as virtual POWs until the end of hostilities. After the war the estimated 8-9000 displaced Acadians managed to reassemble in South Louisiana where their descendants (numbering around 1 million) constitute a dominant population in the area.
