Jacket rubbed at edges with several short tears and small chips. Very light toning to page edges. The author describes his early life with the Acadian people and gives an account of their customs based on his experience. Their ancestors settled in what is now Nova Scotia in the early 17th century, but in 1755 were forcible removed from their ancestral Acadie by the British and dispersed among the British colonies in America where they were kept as virtual POWs until the end of hostilities. After the war the estimated 8-9000 displaced Acadians managed to reassemble in South Louisiana where their descendants (numbering around 1 million) constitute a dominant population in the area. With their strong group identity they maintained their customs, religious beliefs and social attitudes until very recently. Size: 8vo.

The author describes experimental methods employed and statistical results, examining parameters such as sugar yield, Brix, sucrose, and purity. The findings delve into broader industry challenges, namely the need for higher quality crops to match increasing factory capacities. The author argues that improving sucrose content and purity is crucial, especially in light of the freeze damage experienced in recent seasons. The work also includes mill tests and deterioration studies providing valuable insights for sugarcane cultivation and processing. Overall, this book offers a comprehensive analysis of sugarcane variety testing, highlighting key factors that influence crop quality and sugar production, making it an essential resource for professionals in the sugarcane industry. The author conducted comparative tests of promising new varieties alongside established commercial varieties to assess their potential for commercial cultivation. The results of these tests show that C.P. 807 and Co. 281, two newly released varieties, outperformed the established varieties in terms of cane yield and sugar production per acre. C.P. 807 consistently produced the highest yields, while Co. 281 showed a high sugar content. The author also discusses the performance of other promising varieties, including P.O.J. 979, P.O.J. 228, and C.P. 766, but concludes that they are unlikely to achieve commercial significance in Louisiana. The book provides valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to improve sugarcane varieties and increase sugar production, highlighting the importance of ongoing research and testing in the agricultural industry. The author provides detailed results of plant-cane and stubble tests conducted at seven representative locations across the state. The book examines the performance of several sugarcane varieties, including C.P. 807, C.P. 290, Co. 281, and the commercially cultivated P.O.J. varieties. The author evaluates these varieties based on yield of cane per acre, indicated yield of sugar per ton of cane, and indicated yield of sugar per acre. C.P. 290, a variety released in the fall of 1933, emerged as a promising candidate for commercial cultivation, demonstrating high sugar yields and resistance to pests and diseases. The book highlights the importance of ongoing variety testing in identifying sugarcane varieties best suited to Louisiana's diverse growing conditions and provides valuable insights for sugarcane growers and researchers alike.
