This book celebrates the life of William Ladd, an early advocate and founder of the American Peace Society, whose lifelong commitment to peace helped transform public opinion on a topic once supported. From his humble beginnings in New Hampshire, Ladd dedicated his life to spreading the message of peace. The author traces Ladd's journey from sea captain to prominent peace activist, highlighting his ability to connect with people, his unwavering spirit in the face of opposition, and his profound belief in the power of diplomacy. Ladd's influence is explored through the lens of his writings, speeches, and tireless efforts to promote peace through education and collaboration. The author meticulously documents the devastating consequences of war, including the staggering loss of life, both directly on the battlefield and indirectly through disease and privation. The book also highlights the profound economic burden of war, demonstrating how it diverts resources from productive pursuits and perpetuates cycles of poverty and underdevelopment. Furthermore, the author explores the moral and ethical implications of war, challenging the notion of its necessity or legitimacy. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the destructive nature of war, this book serves as a powerful call for the adoption of peaceful means of conflict resolution and the creation of a more just and equitable world order. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. xii, 706 p. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Original boards, modern spine cloth. Minor rubbing to boards extremities. A clean copy with unmarked pages. Ladd's concept of the Congress of Nations was an early American proposal for an international peace regime, similar in many ways to the later League of Nations and United Nations. The essays presented are quite remarkable in their forward thinking and liberal/humanistic view of international relations. Particularly interesting topics include the international Slave Trade (primarily concerning Brazil), the post-Napoleonic Europe, the law of nations, rules of war, and the distinctly American internationalist perspective. Many of the writings appear to be influenced by a Quaker world view. Essays by John A. Bolles, Hamilton [pseud.]. M., [pseud] Thomas C. Upham, A friend of peace, and William Ladd. Appendix: Speeches, petitions, etc., concerning the establishment of a Congress of nations. Judges included John Quincy Adams, Joseph Story, and Daniel Webster.
