The author was born in Connecticut in 1802. He attended Brown University, where one of his instructors was Horace Mann, and one of his classmates was Samuel G. Howe. In 1830 he settled in Louisville, Kentucky, where he founded the Louisville Journal, one of the outstanding literary newspapers in the country. His clever and forceful editorials are thought to have been one of the factors that kept Kentucky in the Union during the Civil War. As a poet, he was a master of the blank verse form. Leather. Condizione: Fair. Book is in worn condition with front board detached. Rear board is a bit loose but binding is solid. Pages have some foxing and some staining but no writing noted to text. 304 pages. Marbled page edges. Both rear free endpapers have a one inch closed tear. Reverse of frontispiece has some writing in pencil. Title page has a name and date written [appears to be H.W. Hazzen 1884] and another number written below title. Bottom third of front free endpaper is loose. It also has a name and date written [appears to be Nov 26th 1832 Amasa F Cummings - possibly the Civil War veteran from Maine 1822-1898]. Book could have been a presentation copy form the P. Club (am unable to make out the name).
