Il s'agit d'une version abrégée de ce très célèbre roman composé au XVIe siècle en Chine du Sud par Wu Cheng'-en (1500-1582) : le récit des pérégrinations du moine bouddhiste Tang Sanzang, parti en Inde pour retrouver les écritures sacrées au VIIe siècle de notre ère, accompagné de quatre personnages fantastiques. Wu Cheng'-en compila de nombreuses sources pour le rédiger notamment la relation d'un disciple de Sanzang, Bianji, de l'époque des Tang (VIIe s.) Plus qu'un roman fantastique, cet ouvrage décrit la société de l'époque Ming, son fonctionnement, son système politique ou encore ses croyances, parfois sur un ton humoristique qui laisse penser à la satire. Il a connu, et connait toujours, une grande notoriété dans la culture populaire, en particulier au travers du personnage de Sun Wukong, le roi-singe qui escorte Tang Sanzang.
