Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the work of the United States Surveying Steamer Search as it explored and mapped the northern and northwestern lakes between 1857 and 1858. Also recorded is the construction of stations for triangulation and astronomical observations, the determination of longitude and latitude for key points, and the creation of preliminary charts. The book offers insights into surveying practices and technological advancements of the time and provides valuable historical context for the development of navigation and commerce in the Great Lakes region. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Meade (1815-1872) was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general during the Civil War. He is best-known for defeating and driving back Robert E. Lee's forces at the Battle of Gettysburg. Earlier in his career, Meade also worked as an engineer under the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers and helped build lighthouses in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, and the Florida Keys. The U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers was active from 1838-1863. The purpose of the organization was to establish coastal fortifications, map navigational routes, and construct federal civil works, such as lighthouses. The U.S. Lake Survey was established in 1841 and oversaw hydrographical surveys of northern and northwestern lakes in order to create navigational charts. The Survey's first charts were published in 1852.…

Decorated Cloth. Condizione: Very Good Plus. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An extremely attractive set of the Harmsworth magazine in 12 bound volumes. The contemporary cloth bindings reflect the progress of the magazine through its different incarnations, from the Harmsworth Magazine through the Harmsworth London Magazine to the London Magazine, the latter two printed by The Amalagamated Press. The books are classic Victorian / Edwardian collections, with fascinating articles and stories by the popular writers of the day, including H G Wells, E Nesbit, Rafael Sabatini and Cutcliffe Hyne, among many others. The bindings are in excellent condition, in mint green with gilt and black debossed design, creating a uniform binding set on the shelf. There are some variants. The majority of bindings use Arabic numerals for the volume number, though with Vols 1 and 2 using Roman numerals, hence the numbering goes I, II, 3, 4, etc. The bindings are clean and tight with sharp edges and surprisingly bright and clean cloth. They have clearly been well kept, and the high quality China clay paper is white, bright and clean, with solid, attractive bindings. In all, this is a lovely set, and an excellent example of the high quality magazine format for which the late Victorian / Edwardian era is rightly famous. Offered at £25 per volume plus shipping. Please note, this heavy set will require extra shipping. Approx 22 kilos when packed. ARTHUR RACKHAM; T H ROBINSON, etc (illustratore). Book.…

The career U.S. Army officer rose to the rank of Major General, commanding the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and participated in many key battles, notably defeating the Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. On an envelope front, Meade boldly addresses it at center "Honl. H. Wilson / U.S. Senate" in brown ink, adding "Ford [Forward] Gen. Pennypacker / US Army" and at lower left signing "from Genl. Meade." 5½" X 4 3/4" with flap present and open (tipped to larger sheet). Near fine. Lightly age toned. Imprinted "Headquarters Military Division of the Atlantic, / Official Business" at upper left -- which dates this undated piece, for Meade took command of this division headquartered in Philadelphia in July 1865 and remained there until early in 1868. Henry Wilson (1812-75) served as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts from 1855 to 1873 before becoming U.S. Grant's second vice president (1873-75). Galusha Pennypacker (possibly 1841-1916) gained fame as perhaps the youngest officer in the Union army to attain the rank of brevet brigadier general; he held several commands, participated in numerous major battles and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher in 1865. The envelope bears a lightly pencilled "7-1" at upper left, so assuming this means July 1st of 1866 it's feasible that Meade wrote to Senator Wilson (Chairman of the Military Committee) on behalf of Pennypacker and recommending his promotion, for in July of that year he was indeed commissioned a Colonel in the 34th U.S. Infantry. Just a theory, but intriguing and it makes sense. Accompanied by an outstanding 8¼" X 11" steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Meade in uniform, set within on oval border and this in turn set within a larger decorative border featuring a tiny vignette near the bottom of a battle scene (labeled "Gettysburg"). Miniscule copyright data at lower margin dates this 1864 as engraved by Virtue, Yorston & Company of New York. Near fine. Faint age toning only. Signed.…
