Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Folio (8 ½" x 11 ½"). Opens with an engraved portrait of Henry Ellis Beecher Stowe (eldest son Harriet Beecher Stowe, who drowned in the Connecticut River on July 9, 1857), followed by 35 oval salted paper print photographs by George K. Warren. All but two photographs are Signed or identified in manuscript below the image. Each print mounted on the recto only of 34 card leaves within a manuscript ruled oval frame. Each image measures approximately 3 ½" x 4 ½". Bound in a later 19th century commercial album (patented 1877) in blind-stamped decorative cloth with an internal metal clasp fastener. The boards are rubbed and moderately soiled, the engraved plate of Stowe is foxed, a few intermittent leaves are toned, very good overall. One of the earliest college yearbook albums illustrated with original photographs, put together by an unidentified member of Dartmouth's class of 1859. Known for the "high quality and strength of his portraits" Warren is credited as the first photographer to specialize in graduating-class photography. He began "his long and prolific photographic career in 1851 in Lowell, Massachusetts, opening one of the city's first daguerreotype studios . When the portrait business in Lowell began to flag just prior to the Civil War, Warren turned to specializing exclusively in senior class photographs for colleges including Dartmouth, Princeton, Williams, Harvard, Brown, Yale, and Rutgers universities," and he kept a virtual monopoly on Ivy League and elite college yearbook photography for more than twelve years. The portraits in this album appear to be mostly of students, many of whom would go on to serve in the Civil War, including William Alfred Barnard (20th Michigan) who was captured in 1864 and survived seven months in a Confederate prison. Also included is George H. Strong, who moved to San Francisco where he joined the Bohemian Club and Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and served as President of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Pacific Coast. A scarce early album featuring many fine portraits by George Warren.456298.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 11" x 14". Bound in quarter black morocco and pebbled cloth over boards, gilt spine with raised bands, front cover lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Compiled by Henry W. Tewksbury, a member of the graduating class, with his name stamped in gilt on the front cover and his bookplate on the front pastedown. Contains 55 albumen prints neatly mounted on the rectos of 55 thick card leaves. Light wear at the edges of the boards, light toning, very good. An attractive Dartmouth College senior "class book" album with photographs most likely made by George K. Warren, credited as the first photographer to specialize in graduating-class photography. Known for the "high quality and strength of his portraits" Warren made all of the photographs for Dartmouth's first yearbook album in 1858 and thereafter kept a virtual monopoly on Ivy League and elite college yearbook photography for more than twelve years. Every yearbook is unique, having been compiled and bound for a particular graduating student. According to one of Warren's contemporary price lists, class portraits were 20 cents each, views and groups were 30 cents each. This album commissioned by Tewksbury contains 51 portraits of senior class members in alphabetical order (Abbott to Worcester, with each surname written in pencil at the bottom edge of the leaf); two campus views; one group portrait of 13 students, members of the Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity; and one group portrait of the entire class of 1870. Laid in are five loose albumen portraits mounted on paper: Dartmouth Presidents Asa D. Smith and Samuel C. Bartlett; professors Edwin D. Sanborn and Henry E. Parker; and one unidentified student. There is also a later tintype portrait of a student laid in next to his albumen portrait; three loose pieces of printed ephemera: a printed1868 program: "Exercises at the Burial of Mathematics"; and two broadsheets relating to the 20th class anniversary. Tipped-in among the student portraits are 13 printed obituary notices dating through the 1890s. Henry Tewksbury, a successful lawyer and popular lecturer, suspended his practice in 1883 in order to tour the country. Severely injured in the 1887 West Hartford (Vermont) railway bridge disaster, Tewksbury recovered and was able to attend the class of 1870 20th anniversary celebration in 1890. Other notable figures pictured in the album include the remarkable character Theodore Barber, a university professor and book collector (and mentor to Andrew Mellon); and senior class President Francis Brown, a distinguished philologist and theologian, and Trustee of Dartmouth. A handsomely bound volume containing many fine portraits by or attributed to Warren.…

2 vols. Folio, half brown leather with brown cloth over boards, beveled edges, raised bands, gilt rules and volume numbers at spine, "Peter Hulme Harvard '72" stamped in gold on upper cover of each volume. Vol. 1: 3 pp. index (partially printed and partially manuscript), 124 photos on 124 leaves; Vol. 2: 2 pp. index (partially printed and partially manuscript), 81 photos on 81 leaves. All photos albumen prints, image sizes ranging from approx. 4.5" x 3.5" (the portraits) to 5.75" x 7.75" (outdoor scenes). All subjects are identified in the index pages. A marvelous two-volume Harvard University class album comprising 205 original photographs, picturing the administration, faculty, students, and campus scenes, including images of a number of notable figures. Vol. 1 features photographs of 124 members of the class; Vol. II comprises photographs of the administration, including the president, the ex-president, the chaplain, and the dean, as well as faculty. Among the latter are Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (18071882), the American poet and educator from Portland, Maine; Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (18411935), the renowned jurist who later served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (19021932); eminent naturalist Louis Agassiz; poet James Russell Lowell; and professor of Greek and remarkable character Evangelinus A. Sophocles, described in two period obituaries laid in as "a picturesque figure.a veritable type of the antique" and "one of the most distinguished members of the Harvard Faculty." Also included in Vol. II are several group portraits and some 41 views of the campus and its vicinity, including the campus quad; several winter campus scenes; various halls and dormitories; churches and chapels; the interior of the library; a boat house; Harvard Square; a museum; an observatory; a gymnasium; etc. In one photo labeled "Goodies," a group of housekeepers is pictured outside a campus building with their cleaning equipment. Photographer George Kendall Warren (18321884) began his prolific career in Lowell, Mass. in 1851 where he opened one of the city's first daguerreotype studios. By 1858when the portrait business in Lowell was in declineWarren began traveling to various Ivy League and elite colleges where he made portraits of the graduating class as well as faculty, landscapes and architectural views of the campuses to fill senior class albums. In 1861 he began taking class photographs for Harvard, and in 1863 he opened a studio in Cambridge and continued what became a long project of capturing campus life and the architecture at Harvard and around Harvard Square. As a result of the success he found, Warren increasingly specialized in class photos for colleges, which came to define his career. In addition to his work for Harvard, he took photos for Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Williams, and Brown. Warren also made many scenic cartes-de-visites of historic sites in the Cambridge, Concord and Boston areas. In 1870, he moved to Boston where he opened a second studio and soon thereafter a third in Cambridgeport. His carte-de-visite portraits of New England notables, including Louisa May Alcott, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and John Greenleaf Whittier, sold widely. Warren also photographed stage and concert celebrities who performed in Boston, including Charlotte Cushman, Mary Anderson and Ole Bull. While albumen prints were introduced in the 1850s, Warren continued using the salted paper print process for the Harvard class albums into the mid-1860s. Forging his own particular aesthetic using this early photographic technique, his images for senior class albums reveal a rich balance of subtle tones and minute details. Albumen print, 4.5" x 3.5" on larger mount. No phtographer's credit. CONDITION: Very good, minimal wear. One of three known photographs of Douglass taken by George Kendall Warren, and the best-known image of the three, having served as the basis for the frontispiece in the first edition of Douglass's The Life and Times (1881). The editors of Picturing Frederick Douglass note that the portrait "has Douglass at his most statesmanlike.with a stern visionary gaze out to the horizon beyond the viewer." The photograph is also one of three that were reproduced as frontispieces for different editions of The Life and Times, the other two being by Charles Bell and John Howe Kent. The cabinet card version of this image is far less frequently encountered than the carte-de-visite. Photographer George Kendall Warren (1824-1884) is remembered for his exceptional portraiture and pioneering work in college yearbook photography. Warren entered the profession as a daguerreotypist in the 1850s, establishing a studio in Lowell, Mass., subsequently moving to Cambridge and Boston. His talent for capturing likenesses led to his photographing numerous celebrities. While his photograph of Frederick Douglass became one of the most recognizable, Warren's true legacy lies in his specialization in college photography. He became the go-to photographer for capturing senior classes at prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, creating a lasting visual record of numerous classes in the 1860s and 1870s. Warren's influence extended beyond his technical proficiency. His work played a crucial role in shaping the visual identity of these institutions and preserving a tangible link between students and their alma maters. Through his lens, he not only documented the physical appearance of his subjects but also captured the spirit of youth and the camaraderie that characterized college life. Warren's untimely death in 1884 cut short a remarkable career. REFERENCES: "George Kendall Warren" at the Getty Museum online; Stauffer, et. al. Picturing Frederick Douglass, p. 110, plate 45 (cat. #96), all for the more closely cropped CDV. The cabinet card is not pictured or described.…
