Named after Elizabeth Gillilland, the wife of a local landholder, the town's early economy relied on lumber and maple sugaring. It became the county seat in 1807, attracting many lawyers. The main industry shifted to tourism by the late 1800s, which continues to be a key part of its economy today, alongside its role as the county seat and government center.
