Aggiungi al carrelloSecond printing (as stated upon copyright page). xii, 294, [5] pages. Hardcover: H 24.25cm x L 15.25cm. Dust jacket rubbed, slight bumping and a few nicks at edges. Blue cloth spine with bright gilt stamping; dark red boards. Interior pages are bright and clean. Binding remains fairly crisp. A near fine copy in a very good dust jacket. Publisher's summary: "Edgar Degas travelled from Paris to New Orleans during the fall of 1872 to visit the American branch of his mother's family, the Mussons. He arrived at a key moment in the cultural history of this most exotic of American cities, still recovering from the agony of the Civil War: the decisive period of Reconstruction, in which his American relatives were importantly involved. This was precisely the time when the American writers Kate Chopin and George Washington Cable were beginning to mine the resources of New Orleans culture and history. What was it about this war-torn, diverse, and conflicted city that elicited from Degas some of his finest paintings? And what do we need to know about New Orleans society to make sense of Degas's stay? Benfey gives us the answers to these questions. Degas's white relatives were among the leaders in some of the most violent uprisings in Reconstruction Louisiana, and his black relatives - whose existence this book is the first to reveal - were no less prominent." {Shelf #3} ISBN 067943562X.…

Aggiungi al carrelloMISBOUND COPY. Early printing (1883 date at foot of title page with 1879 and 1883 copyrights on verso). PART I and PART II bound within single book. Paged as [6], 1-155, [9], 1-145. Hardcover: H 17.25cm x L 11.5cm. Contemporary (late 19th century) half-leather binding; spine's surface leather mostly perished with past owner's gilt stamped name "Holstein" in surviving remnant leather portion at heel; dark paper over boards with leather worn corners; both boards only tenuously attached to text block at joints/hinges. Ink ownership inscription "W.S. Holstein" on front flyleaf; Holstein's faded pencil signature on ffep and on Part I's title page. Part II's original muted brownish-red front cover/wrapper bound-in but rear wrapper not present (Part I has neither wrapper). Text block binding remains firm. PART I supposed to be comprised of "Madame Delphine," "Cafe Des Exiles," and "Belles Demoiselles Plantation" with PART II comprised of "Posson Jone," "Jean-Ah Poquelin," "'Tite Poulette," "'Sieur George," and "Madame Delicieuse." Unfortunate binder's error so that leaves of Part II are inserted in Part I and vice-versa. So collation runs as follows: "Madame Delphine" pages 1-74, "'Tite Poulette" pages 75-95, 'Sieur George" pages 97-119, "Madame Delicieuse" pages 121-155; "Posson Jone" pages 1-27, "Jean-Ah Poquelin" pages 29-61, "'Tite Poulette" pages 63-74, "Madame Delphine" pages 75-81, "Cafe Des Exiles" pages 83-117, "Belles Demoiselles Plantation" pages 119-145. All stories are complete but with Madame Delphine" and "'Tite Poulette" with their pages mis-sequenced. Sold as is. {Literature-Shelf#3}.…
