Si elle a fait l'objet de dizaines de publications, très peu d'entre elles sont dues à des auteurs haïtiens. En ce sens, Peintres haïtiens offre une nouvelle approche puisque l'auteur, Gérald Alexis, universitaire diplômé en Histoire de l'art de l'université du Texas à Austin et spécialisé notamment dans l'art de la Caraïbe et de l'Amérique latine est Haïtien de naissance. Il n'a cessé depuis plus de vingt ans de parfaire sa connaissance de l'art haïtien dont il est aujourd'hui une autorité reconnue. Il propose une approche inédite, structurée autour de quatre thèmes majeurs qui reflètent la diversité des expressions : Portrait et peinture d'histoire ; Nature et vie quotidienne ; Vaudou, rythme et structure; Figuration-Abstraction. Les notices biographiques, enrichies de portraits photographiques des artistes, et un riche appareil critique complètent cet ouvrage de référence qui propose plus de 300 reproductions en couleurs. Sans s'opposer à la notion de "miracle", Gérald Alexis a eu le souci de mettre en évidence les liens étroits qui unissent la peinture avec l'histoire et les traditions artistiques et culturelles d'Haïti, pour expliquer ce développement spectaculaire depuis la création du Centre d'Art en 1944.
