Based loosely on the events of the 1861 Bascomb Affair and the 1862 Battle of Apache Pass, during which Native Americans first encountered howitzers and other modern artillery after the reigning Union government breached several existing treaties and sparked a conflict that resulted in 25 years of Apache unrest.
