De oude vriendenkring is uiteengevallen en iedereen probeert te overleven met de middelen die voorhanden zijn. De huiveringwekkende paranoia van Stalin en de methoden van de NKVD om terreur te handhaven worden blootgelegd, evenals de impact van deze angst op het leven van individuen. De roman schetst een beklemmend beeld van een land dat in de greep van wanhoop en verraad verkeert, met de wanhopige pogingen van enkelen om zich aan deze spiraal te onttrekken.
