Decorative initials and tailpieces. First edition of Gerard Brandt's History of the Reformation in the Low-Countries from the 8th century (712) to 1623. Upon the author's death, only the first two volumes were published. "Historie der Reformatie" was completed by his sons in 1704. This work is illustrated throughout with: - Volume 1: 8 (of 9) striking portraits (Erasmus of Rotterdam, Pope Adrian VI, George Cassander, Hubert Duifhuis, Philips of Marnix, Dirck Coornhert, Franciscus Junius the Elder, Cornelis Hooft) engraved by the eminent Dutch engravors Hendrik Bary (1632-1707) and Antonie van Zylvelt (c. 1640-1695). Unfortunately, the engraved portrait of Prince William of Orange is missing. - Volume 2: 8 (of 8) engraved portraits of Franciscus Gomarus, Petrus Molinaeus (Pierre du Moulin), Jacobus Arminius, Maurice Prince of Orange, Philippe de Mornay, Louise de Coligny, Hugo de Groot, and Johannes Wtenbogaert, by Jan de Visscher (ca. 1636-1712). - Volume 3: 4 (of 5) engraved portraits of the author Gerard Brandt, Johannes Bogerman, Simon Episcopius, and Nicolaas Grevinchoven, by Dutch engravers Pieter van Gunst and Pieter Sluyter. Unfortunately, the engraving depicting the Synod of Dort is missing. - Volume 4: 4 (of 4) engraved portraits of Gerardus Vossius, Carolus Niellius, Caspar Barlaeus, and Eduard Poppius, by Pieter Sluyter and John de Leeuw. Volume 1 has the following flaws: Binding partly age-toned and darkened. Some light water-staining throughout pages 97 and 320, otherwise, pages in very good condition. Binding in overall good, interior in good- to very good condition. Volume 2 is slightly darkened along spine, otherwise in very good condition. Interior also in very good condition. Volume 3 is also slightly darkened along spine, otherwise in very good condition. Interior in very good condition. Volume 4: Binding darkened along spine, with some age-toning / light water-staing to covers. Some light to darker water-staining from page 489 on. Pages slightly rippled due to damp exposure. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in fair/good- to very good condition. Text in Dutch. About the author: Gerard Brandt (1626-1685) was a Dutch preacher, playwright, poet, church historian, biographer and naval historian. A well-known writer in his own time, his works include a Life of Michiel de Ruyter (1687, "Het Leven en bedryf van den Heere Michiel de Ruiter" - an important source on the admiral's life) and a "Historie der vermaerde zee- en koopstadt Enkhuisen" (1666, - still an important source for that city's early history).
