Summary CC CM, 172A contains the editio princeps of two Latin translations made by the late medieval Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (Gerardus Magnus, 1340-1384) and a revised edition of another translation, made by Anthonius Henrici de Viersen (fl. 1460-1490), Brother of the Common Life in Butzbach and collaborator of the proto-humanist Gabriel Biel. The source texts had originally been composed in Middle Dutch, by the great Brabantine mystic Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381) and by Godfried Wevel, one of his fellow canons regular at Groenendaal near Brussels from 1360 until his death in 1396. Another editio princeps completes the volume: a Middle Dutch adaptation of Meister Eckhart's Reden der Unterweisung, the main source for Wevel's Vanden twaelf dogheden. This adaptation was probably compiled in Grote's entourage, if not by him personally, and is here edited as Eyn boeck van der gelatenheit. The publication of Grote's adaptation of Eckhart and the accompanying convincingly underpinned analysis may mean a landslide for the proper assessment of Eckhart's reception in the Low Countries and adjacent territories in modern western Germany during the later Middle Ages. Each of the edited texts is accompanied by an apparatus comparatiuus, indicating in detail all discrepancies between the translations and the source texts. Hardback --- Summary During a diocesan synod held in 1383, the Dutch Church reformer Geert Grote (1340-1384) delivered a sermon in which he vigorously attacked priests living together with concubines in the Diocese of Utrecht, whom he called focarists. After he had delivered his sermon, Grote worked it out into a written treatise comprising 26 dicta or chapters in more than 3500 lines. Grote advocated a rigorous viewpoint. Thus, he pointed out in dictum 2 that anyone who attends the offices of a notorious focarist, commits a mortal sin. His strict position met with considerable opposition. This led to various minor works either summarizing the long sermon or elucidating particular points. In the end, Grote's opponents succeeded in their efforts to bring about his downfall. In the present volume the major documents in the focarists' dossier are edited scientifically for the first time, replacing the earlier 1830's edition. The volume also presents an editio princeps of a Middle Dutch partial translation as well as of a recently discovered fragment elaborating on the contents of dictum 2. In unfolding his diatribe, Grote relies on a great number of authorities and predecessors. A detailed analysis of this wealth of material has resulted in a highly innovative assessment of Grote's use of sources, included among the introductory matter. ISBN: 978-2-503-56640-5. Hardback -- SUMMARY Gerardus Magnus or Geert Grote (1340-1384), the founder of the Dutch religious reform movement Deuotio moderna, is the author of a rich and varied written legacy. Shortly after his death already, his biographers singled out his attempts to improve the moral standards of contemporary clergymen among his most noteworthy pursuits. His efforts in this field basically came down to opposition against two forms of abuse in the world of the clergy, incompetence and corruption. In the present volume his essays against corruption in the medieval Church are edited. These essays address corrupt practices in connection with the acquisition of, and functioning in, ecclesiastical offices, as well as the widespread custom to require an admission fee from prospective residents in religious institutions. Grote defined his views on such entrance fees shortly after his conversion to a devout lifestyle in 1374, in the Statutes composed for religious women living together in part of his own house. Because of its relevance for the essays against entrance fees, a new edition of these Statutes is included in the present edition. Related to these abuses is a tolerant attitude towards personal possessions belonging to individual residents in religious communities, a custom known as proprietarism. Grote's essays against this evil are also included in the edition. TABLE OF CONTENTS Gerardus Magnus (Geert Grote) Consilium de cura pastorali (ep. 73) ed. R.
