Three Quarter Leather. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Norwegian language. Bound in 3/4 burgundy leather and marbled boards. 348 pages. 1899 title page date; no additional printings. A study concerning the history of Norwegian writing. This copy is signed and dated Jan. 1900 by then Professor of Scandinavian Languages Julius E. Olson (University of Wisconsin - Madison); it also carries the bookplate of Norwegian-American collector Herman Gimmestad on the front pastedown. Gimmestad acquired many of Olson's books in the 1940s. The boards show only light edgewear, the corners are rubbed, and both outer joints are cracked. The inner hinges are reinforced, so both covers are still firmly attached. The spine leather has chipped at the head and along the rear joint. The text has an occasional marginal bracket, in pencil, but is otherwise unmarked. Given the publisher, we think this copy may have been a paperback original, later bound by Olson, but we have not been able to locate any other copies, either in the US or Europe, to make a comparison. A scarce book, deserving of some professional restoration. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

This book intricately uncovers the deep-seated psychological and sociological roots of the transformative ideas that were introduced by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The author profoundly analyzes the dual influences of Calvinist thought and the unique societal structure of Geneva, Rousseau's birthplace, which instilled within him the fervent moralism, combative spirit, and nascent republicanism that would permeate his writings. Moreover, it unravels the threads of Rousseau's legacy, tracing their influence on the cultural, philosophical, and political landscapes of Europe in the nineteenth century. Through meticulously researched historical context, this book provides a multifaceted exploration of Rousseau's seminal ideas, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the intellectual framework of Western thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
