Vicaire (V-899) signale 50 exemplaires de tête sur papier de couleur. Il s'agit ici de la 4ème traduction française de ce texte célèbre (publié pour la première fois en 1626) dont le titre varie selon les traducteurs (L'aventurier Buscon, Le grand Taquin, Le grand Vaurien, Le fin Matois). Germond de Lavigne donne dans sa lettre préface de précieuses informations sur l'histoire de cet ouvrage et de ses différentes adaptations. La lettre de Charles Nodier n'est, quant à elle, qu'une caution littéraire apportée au travail du traducteur.
