Carmen Cicero (born Newark, New Jersey, 1926) studied under Hans Hofmann and Robert Motherwell and came up as a second-generation Abstract Expressionist in the New York School; his work of the 1950s entered the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney, and he held two Guggenheim Fellowships (1957 and 1963). After a 1971 studio fire destroyed his early work, he turned from abstraction toward a figurative and ultimately visionary expressionism. These nine paintings belong to that later mode, mysterious narrative scenes such as The Searcher, The Windmill, and The Ghost. Introduction by Gerrit Henry; with biography, exhibition history, and lists of public and private collections.

Most of the pictures depict farm and rural life, i…ncluding bee keeping - but there are a few figurative works, a mature nude woman, and a few still life pictures. Beal is considered to be one of America's leading New York State realist painters.
