Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. Gertrude Kasebier, Photographic history (illustratore). 1st Edition. Very clean first edition, first printing in clean unworn dust jacket - now in new archival quality removable mylar cover. Glossy photo-illustrated boards - no bumping or wear. Binding is tight and square, pages are clean with clean decorated endpapers - small remainder mark on bottom text block page edges near spine. 160 pages. Clean dust jacket is unchipped, no wear, no tears, not price clipped. In 1898, Kasebier wrote to William F. Cody requesting to photograph Indians performing in his Wild West show at Madison Square Garden. Her photographs proved poignant. Her studio had no elaborate backdrops, and she removed Indian regalia to depict her subjets as "raw" individuals, with strong personalites and experiences that blurred the distinction between traditional life and contemporary times. Kasabier developed long relationships with several of the Indians, corresponding with a few for many years. Examples of these letters appear in the book, as well as drawings done by Indians waiting in her studio, photographs of Dakota Sioux on their reservation, and little-known historical background.

Fotografia Prima edizione
Paper. Condizione: Fine. Gertrude Kasebier (illustratore). First Edition Thus. Published in Camera Notes, volume 3, number I (July 1899). Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 6 inches by 4 inches. Gertrude Kasebier (1853-1934), a leading photographer in the photo-secessionist movement is perhaps best known for her excellent portraits. Alfred Stieglitz recognized her talent when he selected five (!) of her photographs for inclusion in the July 1899 issue of his new magazine Camera Notes. In explaining that decision Stieglitz declared that she was "beyond dispute, the leading artistic portrait photographer of the day." The portrait offered here is one of Kasebier's finest. It was highly appreciated by Frances Benjamin Johnston, who had the photogravure in her personal collection until she donated it to the Library Of Congress in 1948. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually as-new condition. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout and ready to be framed in a standard 11" by 14" frame. Size: 6 inches by 4 Inches. Photo.

Printed as a photogravure by the Photochrome Engraving Company, a company that Alfred Stieglitz had founded. Image size is 6 7/8 inches by 4 3/4 inches. In explaining that decision Stieglitz declared that she was "beyond dispute, the leading artistic portrait photographer of the day." Fred Holland Day (1864-1933) was a major pictorialist photographer who rivaled Stieglitz in influence and reputation early in their careers. He was quite forgotten for some time, but beginning in the 1990s collectors rediscovered him, and his originals are in high demand, in large part because of his homoerotic portraits. Day also photographed a portrait of Kasebier in 1899, perhaps during the same session. In 1901-02 Kasebier carried on correspondence with Day; their letters to each other reflect their growing mutual frustration with Stieglitz. The photogravure is in excellent condition: a superb impression that is in virtually as-new condition. Now archivally matted in an off-white passe-partout. Size: 6 7/8 inches by 4 3/4 Inches. Photo.
