Cela s'explique en grande partie par la rareté du texte, transmis par un seul témoin manuscrit ; et cette rareté elle-même peut s'expliquer par l…es difficultés inhérentes au texte (son sujet, sa langue), mais aussi par le peu d'intérêt qu'il pouvait présenter aux yeux de lecteurs occidentaux, une fois passé le IVe siècle. Aujourd'hui, cependant, il est une source irremplaçable sur des faits qu'il est particuliè- rement difficile, dix-sept siècles plus tard, de documenter et de débrouiller. Avant d'en proposer l'édition et une traduction française, nous entreprendrons dans cette introduction d'éclaircir les circonstances dans lesquelles ce texte a été rédigé et les circonstances dans lesquelles il s'est transmis jusqu'à nous."
