Robert John Gibbings (1889-1958), was an Irish artist, publisher and travel author who was most noted for his work as a wood engraver and sculptor, and for his books on travel and natural history. Along with Noel Rooke he was one of the founder members of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920, and was a major influence in the revival of wood engraving in the twentieth century. In 1940 Gibbings had begun to take part in natural history trips to various English rivers organised by Reading University. With three other helpers he built himself a boat, the Willow, and floated down the Thames. The result was 'Sweet Thames Run Softly'. 'Coming down the Wye' and 'Lovely is the Lee' followed, based on the familiar pattern of personal encounter and anecdote, and historical and cultural research, all illustrated by his wood engravings. Jacket and woodcut illustrations by the author (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good +. Limited Edition. One of 250 signed copies, large octavo size, 59 pp., signed by both Coppard and Gibbings. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920, at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds, including another renaissance of the pr…inting press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill, Blair Hughes-Stanton, and the artist for this work, Robert Gibbings - who was also the owner of the Press at this point. Alfred Edgar Coppard (1878-1957) was an aspiring author when The Golden Cockerel Press published one of his prior works, "Adam & Eve & Pinch Me" in 1921; it was met with critical success which launched Coppard's career as a writer. This humourous little book is a compendium of how to play Rummy along with (or while?) exploring parts of Ireland, embellished with wood engravings by both Coppard and Gibbings, often taking jabs at each other in the captions.even one of the final pages of text ("Index") has boldly printed in red ink at the bottom the notation: "Postscript: For Coppard read throughout Prevaricator. - R.G.". ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in green morocco with patterned cloth over boards, title in gilt on the spine, illustrated title page with the word "Rummy" in red, the signatures of Coppard and Gibbings on dedication page ("To the finest hotel in the world, Cronin's of Gougane Barra" - which, incidentally, is still in existence), fifteen engravings both in-text and half-page throughout, vintage bookseller ticket on the rear pastedown; Caslon O.F. type on Batchelor paper, large octavo size (9 5/8" by 6 3/8"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-[53] [1, blank] [1, colophon]; signed limited edition of 250 copies, this no. 39 (there were also 1000 unsigned trade editions). ___CONDITION: Better than very good, the leather shelfback smooth and supple, the boards clean, straight corners with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the spine sunned to brown, a small area of residue on the front pastedown likely from an old Ex-Libris, minor toning and a few light spots on the endpapers. ___CITATION: Chanticleer, no. 86. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Gibbings, Robert [and] Coppard, A.E. (illustratore).
