This definitive Latin edition contains a facing English translation by Professor Salmon, and a joint introduction in which the editors discuss the genesis and development of the text, which can no longer be regarded as written in response to the massacre of St Bartholomew. The editors analyse the discordant elements in Hotman's thought as his Calvinist background, his fundamentalism in both constitutional and religious doctrine and his ambivalent attitude to his profession as an eminent jurist.

Tradition…nellement, cette loi, prétendument établie par les anciens francs, qui interdisait aux filles de roi et à leurs descendants toute prétention à la succession royale, aurait été inventée et diffusée par les rois français par refus du principe féminin, selon une misogynie éternelle ou nouvelle (liée à la promotion de l'Etat). L'auteur montre qu'il n'en est rien et que la loi a été brandie ou récusée, parfois par les mêmes personnes, pour justifier des ambitions personnelles ou de lignage, en concurrence avec d'autres groupes ou individus. Autrement dit, elle a été utilisée comme instrument pratique non comme arme idéologique. Chaque dossier de succession est examinée de près, avec des documents nouvellement connus ou analysés: après avoir montré l'absence de problème chez les capétiens directs (chapitre1), l'auteur considère la succession de 1315 (chapitre2), puis la promotion de la branche Valois en 1328 (chapitres 3 et 4), en se concentrant sur le mythe de la loi salique (chapitre 5), avant de passer au traité de Troyes (1420), qui soumet la France à l'Angleterre en liant la succession des rois anglais à la loi salique (chapitre 6).
