This is a compendium of different literary features such as fictional short stories, nonfictional articles, poetry, and editorials by different contributors. Most, if not all, of the features are intended to be humorous or satirical in nature. Cruikshank's illustrations are interspersed among the text. Contributors: John Oxenford, Horace Mayhew, Gilbert A. a Beckett, Shirley Brooks, Mark Lemon, Paul Prendergast, Michael Angelo Titmarsh, Angus B. Reach, and "-- Ferguson." George Cruikshank (also, Cruickshank; 1792-1878) was an English caricaturist and book illustrator. Such was his renown that he was sometimes called the "modern Hogarth" in his time. Bound volume containing all 51 issues of this English comic weekly for the year 1837. The issues are numbered #266 through #317. Each issue consists of four pages and is printed in double columns. Figaro in London was founde…d on Dec. 10, 1831 and ran until Dec. 31, 1838. It contained political comment, society gossip, verses and theater reviews as well as illustrations by Robert Seymour and others. The volume offered here also has three full-page engraved portraits. The issues themselves are in remarkably good condition with some minor browning and wear. The binding is quite worn with the front cover detached and the spine heavily chipped. Foreign postage extra on this large book.

Cohn 191. First produced as a series of monthly publications, this delightful book of humor, satire, and illustration comments on the foibles of the human condition. The editor, Gilbert Abbot à Beckett (1811-1856) was a British humorist and editor of the Figaro in London and one of the original staff members at Punch. The illustrations of British caricaturist George Cruikshank (1792-1878) are exuberant and often irreverent. Although society, language, and styles change, human nature remains the same and the humor in this volume is relevant today. The binder, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) was originally from Austria-Hungary. After apprenticeships in Germany, Vienna, and Paris he relocated to London. His bindings received awards at international exhibitions including the London International Exhibition of 1862.
