Hardcover. First edition. 2 p.l., 7-89, [1] p. 19 cm. Translated into English Rhyming verse with Introduction and Notes. "Seven Against Thebes" is the third and only surviving play from a tetralogy Aeschylus entered in the Great Dionysia. The tetralogy follows the cursed Theban patriarchy headed by Laius--the focus of the first tragedy--his son Oedipus--the focus of the second tragedy--and Oedipus's sons, Eteocles and Polyneices, featured in "Seven Against Thebes". Eteocles, the reigning King of Thebes, must defend his city against his own brother Polyneices, who, in concert with Adrastus, the King of Argos, plans to invade Thebes and claim the throne. Before battle, the seven invading captains choose lots to determine which of the seven Theban gates to attack. A messenger delivers each announcement to Eteocles, who sends one of his own men to defend the gate. The last announcement names Polyneices as the final invading captain, pitting him against his own brother, Eteocles. The two brothers take up arms against each other and both are killed during the successful defense of the city. Good. No dust jacket. Top edge soiled.

Hardcover. Reprint. 11th printing, 1942. xi, 105 p.; 20 cm. This was translated into English rhyming verse with explanatory notes. Murray, Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford has translated The Iphigenia in Tauris into English rhyming verse with explanatory notes. The play is not in the modern sense a tragedy, it is a romantic drama, beginning in a tragic atmosphere and moving through perils and escapes to a happy end. The story tells of Iphigenia who is sacrificed by her father to the goddess Artemis. At the last moment she is saved from death by Artemis, but is then set down in the land of Tauri to be her priestess, where all strangers cast on their shores are sacrificed in a savage ritual. Iphigenia, obedient to her goddess, and held by the spell of the altar, had to consecrate the victims, all of whom were Barbarians, as they went to be slaughtered. She waited in half in horror and half in revenge to sacrifice a Greek. When one arrives, it turns out to be her brother Orestes, although she doesn't know this at first. The recognition scene between Iphigenia and Orestes became a model to Aristotle. While not of the same order as Euripides' The Trojan Women, Iphigenia is a delightful play. Good in good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling, edge tears and chips. Top edge soiled.
