Born in Peacharm, Vermont, Beth Bradford Gilchrist [1879-1957] was an American author who wrote numerous juvenile books [The Life of Mary Lyon (1910), the Helen series (1912-1915), Trails' End (1925), Cinderella's Grandaughter, The Camerons of Highbord, etc.] and wrote for St. Nicholas Magazine and also for Youth's Companion Under the pen name "John Preston Earl" she also wrote a series of boys' prep-school stories. Charles Mark Relyea [1863-1932] was an American illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, e.g. St. Nicholas Magazine. A native of Albany, New York, Relyea studied art under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and under Frank Vincent DuMond at the Art Students League in New York City before completing his training in Paris.
