Prima edizione
A first edition of Rodman Gilder's The Battery (1936), accompanied by a period 1943 Goldman Concert Band program from Bowling Green Park - an especially relevant artifact connected to the site's civic and cultural history. A richly detailed historical narrative of New York City's Battery, tracing its evolution from early Dutch settlement through its role as a cultural, military, and immigration gateway. Gilder blends narrative history with archival sources, covering four centuries of life at Manhattan's southern tip. The volume is enhanced with numerous illustrations, maps, and period images depicting Castle Garden, the harbor, and surrounding streets, making it both a historical account and a visual record of early New York. This copy is exceptionally well-preserved, bound in bright red cloth with black title labels to front and spine. The book is graded Near Fine: pages are clean and bright, binding is tight, and only light shelf wear is evident. A particularly appealing feature is the inclusion of several pieces of period ephemera ranging from 1943 through 1964, most notably an original June 22, 1943 Goldman Concert Band program from Bowling Green Park - an artifact directly tied to the historical setting of the Battery and illustrative of its continued civic and cultural life into the 20th century. Additional laid-in materials include contemporary newspaper clippings and related items, all in Very Good condition with expected age toning. Published by Houghton Mifflin at The Riverside Press, Cambridge, this is the original 1936 printing, with copyright page dated 1936 and no indication of subsequent printings. Copies accompanied by relevant contemporary ephemera are uncommon and offer added appeal to collectors of New York City history, Americana, and archival material. Rodman Gilder (1877-1953) was an American writer, poet, and editor associated with The Century Magazine and other literary institutions. Deeply engaged in New York's cultural life, he contributed significantly to preserving and interpreting the city's historical landscape. An uncommon opportunity to acquire a well-preserved first edition enhanced by historically relevant, site-specific ephemera.
