A substantial, well-preserved classroom/reading copy in blue cloth with pictorial paper labels to the front board and spine. The book offers a concise, mid-20th-century survey of European political and economic developments since 1815, illustrated with charts and a large folding economic map. Physically this copy is unusually clean for a wartime-era school/office book: the cloth is bright with only minor rubbing to corners and light bumping to spine ends; paper labels show modest edge wear with small chips; pages are complete and mostly clean with uniform age-toning to the text block edges. The large folding map is intact and clean, and all gatherings are secure. Condition & provenance: Very Good+ / Near Fine overall for the binding; no dust jacket was issued. Interior shows a red 'PROPERTY OF U.S. GOVERNMENT' stamp on the front endpaper and a penciled ownership block above a pencil signature (see photos). Inscription reads: 'A. Reuter, PFC, Co. F, Barr. 12, K-I House, 150 Langdon St., A.S.T.P., U. of Wis.' - identifying a Private First Class assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Minor margin creasing to a few leaves and trivial corner wear; hinges sound, text complete, no markings that affect legibility. Edition/Printing determination: The book carries a 1942 copyright and a 1943 title-page date; this is offered as a first edition, 1943 (first printing), consistent with publisher practice of the period.
