Gillis recounts many stories of their adventures with Twain well before he published his first book, in fact, they were the ones who took Twain to Calaveras County to the famous jumping frog competition which resulted in Twain's first book. Second edition. Very Good. Pictorial Soft Cover Stapled Wraps. This was later expanded and reissued as "Gold Rush Days with Mark Twain," (1930). Steve Gillis had gone to San Francisco in 1853 and worked on the "San Francisco Herald" during the days of the Vigilantes and the resurrection of San Francisco. In 1857 he went to Oregon to work on the "Messenger." In 1861, when the "Territorial Enterprise" was established in Virginia City, Gillis went there and it was there that he became close friends with Mark Twain. Illustrated throughout with b/w photographs. Covers show light wear and toning, with crease at front bottom right corner and mild loss at tail of spine, creasing along spine. Previous owner's bookplate at free front endpaper; otherwise interior is clean, crisp, tight & bright, unmarked. 128 pp. Approx. 5.5" x 8.5". A very nice copy. Carefully shipped in secure parcel. Ask all questions; glad to respond.
30 pp. Original printed limp card wraps, stapled. 21.5 cm x 14 cm. Wraps slightly soiled with some random marks, marginal age browning to wrap edges, contents lightly age browned.
