'There are essays in this volume by Clarence Gohdes, Theodore Hornberger, Leon Howard, Alfred Kazin, Harry Levin, Norman Holmers Pearson, Henry Nash Smith, Robert E. Spiller, Willard Thorp, Lionel Trilling, Stanley T. Williams, Louis B. Wright. The essays consider three major questions, the American writer's heritage of European ideas- the question of which ideas, moods, manners in American writers were primarily indigenous to America, and thirdly, the influence of American Literature in Europe. I read with special interest the Thorpe essays on 'American Writers as Critics of Nineteenth Century Society' in which he focuses on Emerson's development in moving from the purely transcendental to the political, and also surveys the views of Melville, Thoreau, Whitman and finally Twain.
