Aggiungi al carrelloGILMOR, Col. Harry. Four Years in the Saddle. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1866. 1st American ed. 12mo. 291pp., frontis. Orig. cloth. Light rubbing to the extremities. Pages are evenly toned as usual. A very good or better copy, inscribed by Gilmor a preliminary blank with clipped obituaries of Gilmor mounted opposite. Howes G-1…87. Nevins I, p. 94. While Gilmor produced a narrative that is known for its embellishment, there is still some value, according to Coulter, as a general account. "A Marylander, Gilmor crossed the Potomac soon after the outbreak of the Civil War and enlisted in the Confederate Army. Except for participation in the Gettysburg campaign, in McCausland's raid into Pennsylvania which burned Chambersburg, and his outriding to the environs of Baltimore on the occasion of Early's expedition against Washington in the summer of 1864, his activities were limited almost entirely to the Shenandoah Valley. He was twice captured by the Federals, the first time in September, 1862, when he was held six months in Baltimore, and again in February, 1865, when he was taken to Fort Warren in Boston harbor and held until July of that year" Coulter 186.
