Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. John Hennig (1911-1986) was a German scholar who was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1939 with his family. They found refuge in Ireland where they stayed until 1956. During that period Hennig made a significant impression on Irish society, as Ireland did on him. He wrote and published extensively and became friends with many of the leading figures of the day. His impressions of Ireland are published for the first time here in the English language, while distinguished scholars and Hennig experts Gisela Holfter and Hermann Rasche provide an account of his life and work. John Hennig was a remarkable man and talented writer and is rightly regarded as the "father" of Irish-German Studies. Paperback. Condizione: New. The monograph provides the first comprehensive, detailed account of German-speaking refugees in Ireland 1933-1945 - where they came from, immigration policy towards them and how their lives turned out in Ireland and afterwards. Thanks to unprecedented access to thousands of files of the Irish Department of Justice (all still officially closed) as well as extensive archive research in Ireland, Germany, England, Austria as well as the US and numerous interviews it is possible for the first time to give an almost complete overview of how many people came, how they contributed to Ireland, how this fits in with the history of migration to Ireland and what can be learned from it.While Exile studies are a well-developed research area and have benefited from the work of research centres and archives in Germany, Austria, Great Britain and the USA (Frankfurt/M, Leipzig, Hamburg, Berlin, Innsbruck, Graz, Vienna, London and SUNY Albany and the Leo Baeck Institutes), Ireland was long neglected in this regard. Instead of the usual narrative of "no one was let in" or "only a handful came to Ireland" the authors identified more than 300 refugees through interviews and intensive research in Irish, German and Austrian archives. German-speaking exiles were the first main group of immigrants that came to the young Irish Free State from 1933 onwards and they had a considerable impact on academic, industrial and religious developments in Ireland.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -The Shannon Scheme was an undertaking of remarkable ambition and significance, the impact of which continues to resonate across many spheres of Irish life. Yet numerous aspects of this pioneering project remain underexplored and merit further attention, particularly now, more than a century after work on the Scheme commenced. This volume examines a wide range of fascinating dimensions of the hydroelectric power station constructed by Siemens between 1925 and 1929, including its historical context, engineering achievements, literary and artistic representations, music, marketing, and the individuals who shaped its development. It also highlights the key archival sources that enable new insights into the Scheme's history. As this unique Irish-German endeavour continues to reveal new perspectives, many compelling stories remain to be discovered and told.Contributors include Ewald Blocher, Jaz Burns, Tom Cosgrove, Angela Drescher, Joachim Fischer, Patrick Geoghegan, David Gill, Sean Hegarty, Gisela Holfter, Sinéad Hutchison, George Lee, Sian McInerney, Rachel McNicholl, Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh, Sorcha O'Brien, Deirdre O'Loughlin, Joe Walsh.ContentsDavid GillA Look into the Diplomatic Correspondence 1Joe WalshThe Enduring Significance of the Shannon Scheme - A Siemens Perspective 5Sean Hegarty100 Years of Transformation: ESB and the Legacy of the Shannon Scheme 11Section I: Exploring Different FacetsGisela HolfterExploring the Many Facets of the Shannon Scheme - An Introduction 15Thomas CosgroveArdnacrusha Power Station: Some Technical Background and Project Context 37Patrick Geoghegan'The Impossible Job' - Ardnacrusha and the Making of the New State 49Deirdre O'LoughlinArdnacrusha: Marketing the Power of Progress 63Joachim FischerGerman engineers and their adventures in Ardnacrusha: The Shannon Scheme in Irish and German literature 95Sorcha O'BrienTeapots for Engineers: Shannon Scheme Ceramics from Bavaria to Limerick 113Róisín Ní GhallóglaighThe Shannon Scheme in Song 131Angela Drescher'Irland nach allen vier Himmelsrichtungen' - Ein deutscher Ingenieur im Shannon Scheme, 1926-1930 145Angela Drescher (translated by Rachel McNicholl)'All four corners of Ireland' - A German Engineer on the Shannon Scheme, 1926-1930 157George Lee'A Front-Row Seat': Parish, Power and the Coming of Electricity in Parteen 169Section II: Archives and Preservation WorkEwald BlocherHidden Treasures - the Shannon Collection at the Siemens Historical Institute Berlin 175Jaz BurnsThe ESB Archive 187Sian McInerney, Sinéad HutchisonThe Hunt Museum 197Notes on Contributors 201 214 pp. Englisch. …

As this unique Irish-German endeavour continues to reveal new perspectives, many compelling stories remain to be discovered and told.Contributors include Ewald Blocher, Jaz Burns, Tom Cosgrove, Angela Drescher, Joachim Fischer, Patrick Geoghegan, David Gill, Sean Hegarty, Gisela Holfter, Sinéad Hutchison, George Lee, Sian McInerney, Rachel McNicholl, Róisín Ní Ghallóglaigh, Sorcha O'Brien, Deirdre O'Loughlin, Joe Walsh.ContentsDavid GillA Look into the Diplomatic Correspondence 1Joe WalshThe Enduring Significance of the Shannon Scheme - A Siemens Perspective 5Sean Hegarty100 Years of Transformation: ESB and the Legacy of the Shannon Scheme 11Section I: Exploring Different FacetsGisela HolfterExploring the Many Facets of the Shannon Scheme - An Introduction 15Thomas CosgroveArdnacrusha Power Station: Some Technical Background and Project Context 37Patrick Geoghegan'The Impossible Job' - Ardnacrusha and the Making of the New State 49Deirdre O'LoughlinArdnacrusha: Marketing the Power of Progress 63Joachim FischerGerman engineers and their adventures in Ardnacrusha: The Shannon Scheme in Irish and German literature 95Sorcha O'BrienTeapots for Engineers: Shannon Scheme Ceramics from Bavaria to Limerick 113Róisín Ní GhallóglaighThe Shannon Scheme in Song 131Angela Drescher'Irland nach allen vier Himmelsrichtungen' - Ein deutscher Ingenieur im Shannon Scheme, 1926-1930 145Angela Drescher (translated by Rachel McNicholl)'All four corners of Ireland' - A German Engineer on the Shannon Scheme, 1926-1930 157George Lee'A Front-Row Seat': Parish, Power and the Coming of Electricity in Parteen 169Section II: Archives and Preservation WorkEwald BlocherHidden Treasures - the Shannon Collection at the Siemens Historical Institute Berlin 175Jaz BurnsThe ESB Archive 187Sian McInerney, Sinéad HutchisonThe Hunt Museum 197Notes on Contributors 201. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - John Hennig (1911-1986) was a German scholar who was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1939 with his family. John Hennig was a remarkable man and talented writer and is rightly regarded as the 'father' of Irish-German Studies.…
