Aggiungi al carrelloAn assemblage of land snails from an aeolianite deposit on the coast of the southern Greek island of Andikithira is shown to date to 16 000 yr BP and thus represents the period of the last glacial maximum (LGM; Oxygen Isotope Stage 2). The assemblage has no modern analogue. Five of the ten species are extinct on the island and s…ome of these now live only at high elevations (> 950 m). Significantly cooler temperatures, some 5-8°C below present, and slightly drier moisture conditions (lower rainfall, partially offset by reduced evapotranspiration at the lower temperature) are inferred. The large temperature depression at the LGM, well documented in northern and central Europe, extended also to the Mediterranean climate of southern Europe. Late Quaternary climatic changes had a considerable impact on the fauna of this isolated island. 8 pp., 3 figs, 4.

Revised descriptions of E. costulatum (Kiener, 1838) and E. ulu Pilsbry, 1921 based on type specimens and additional material are given. Four new species are described: E. hoeksemai, E. ingri…dae, E. lochi, and E. twilae. The true identity of E. bullatum (Sowerby, 1844), a species not associated with corals and not found in Sulawesi and nearby areas, is clarified. Examination of type specimens made possible the characterization of nominal species that appear to be either identical with or closely related to the fungiid-associated epitoniids found off Sulawesi. 13 pp., 48 figs, 4.

Aggiungi al carrelloSystematic sampling of a single square km patch of rather acidic, undisturbed, fairly uniform Cameroonian rainforest during two different rainy seasons yielded 97 species of land snails, belonging to at least 12 families. Up to 45 species were collected within a single sampling site of 20 m X 20 m during a single visit, and up t…o 51 during two visits in different seasons. This might be the world's highest sympatric land snail diversity reported to date. Variation in species composition among the sampling sites appeared to be largely random, and not due to geographic or ecological replacement. Three (super)families make up 86% of the species, the carnivorous Streptaxidae (34%) being the most diverse. Overall snail abundance was rather low, and many species were rare. Of 64% of the species, the abundance was less than 1% of all specimens (2,654) collected. A substantial difference was observed in overall snail abundance between the two sampling periods. About 27% of the species were uniquely found in one of the two sampling periods, and many species differed more than 50% in relative abundance between these seasons. At least 27% of the species were largely or completely arboreal, and 19% were found to live both on the ground and in the vegetation; 46% of the species appear to be confined to the ground, and of 7% insufficient information was available. Major adult shell dimensions (height or diameter) range between approximately 1 and 165 mm, but the vast majority (74%) of species had adult shells smaller than 10 mm. The shell height:diameter ratio distribution is bimodal, but differs from those previously reported for other faunas by relatively many "globose" (H/D 0.8-1.2) and very tall (H/D 2.8-4.4) shells. The distribution of neither shell size nor shell shape differed between ground-dwelling and (partly) arboreal species. 20 pp., 5 figs, gr. 8.

When, in the early 1960's, Dr. F. Mason Sones demonstrated that visualization of the coronary anatomy in living human…s was not only feasible but sufficiently safe and reliable to be used as a clinical tool in the evaluation of patients with known or suspected ischemic heart disease, the thus far somewhat neglected area of coronary circulation became the focus of interest. Naturally, for a considerable period of time a great deal of emphasis was placed upon coronary anatomy. Simple relations between narrowing lesions, impediment to flow, and prognosis were assumed to exist. Spectacular results of surgical coronary revascularization seemed to confirm this concept. Gradually it has become evident that the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease is considerably more complex. Diagnostic methods were introduced to assess and quantify exercise-induced myocardial ischemia. At first, these tests were used mainly to achieve a more discriminative selection of candidates for coronary arteriography and the coronary arteriogram remained the gold standard. Currently, these techniques have evolved to the point where they provide valuable functional and metabolic information. They have become powerful independent tools in clinical investigations and evaluation of individual patients.
