C'est le Dalaï Lama lui-même, chef spirituel et temporel du Tibet, en exil en Inde depuis plus de quarante-cinq ans à la suite de l'invasion de son pays par la Chine en 1959, qui a choisi les Lamas photographiés pour ce livre et en a écrit la préface. Il pense en effet que cette publication aura une grande signification historique car ces Lamas, gardiens de l'ancienne sagesse bouddhiste transmise par la tradition orale, sont les dépositaires du vaste savoir de la culture tibétaine. La photographe Melina Mulas a entrepris ce projet en 1991. Depuis, elle a voyagé dans le monde pour rencontrer et photographier les Lamas. Le département de la Religion et de la Culture de Dharamsala, siège du gouvernement tibétain en exil, a autorisé et suivi le projet. Les photographies présentées ici n'ont jamais été publiées auparavant. Les sobres et splendides images en noir et blanc des visages de ces maîtres communiquent pleinement leurs personnalités extraordinaires, se concentrant exclusivement sur leurs aspects humains et spirituels plutôt que religieux. Elles établissent un contact saisissant avec le regard profond de ces grands maîtres. Le volume contient également une interview que Sa Sainteté le Dalaï Lama a spécialement accordée à Melina Mulas pour cette publication.

Engraved title and 11 copperplate engravings by Pietro Santi Bartoli (16151700) after Giulio Romano [or Giulio Pippi] (ca. 14991546), pupil of Raphael. Nine of the prints consist of a single oblong image, two of the prints consist of two images printed side by side fr…om a single plate, and one print consists of three such images. Bound out of order, the first two in this copy are of St. Sylvester chaining the dragon and St. Helen embracing Constantine, captioned "Draconem laethali alitu, homines enecantem Silvester obsignatum signo Crucis." All engravings signed by "Apud Io. Iacobum de Rubeis." i.e. Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (16271691), the Roman publisher. The engraved title signed "Romae Apud Ioan. Iacobum de Rubeis. Alla Pace Sup(er) permissu(s)." Dedicated to Giacomo Filippo Nini (16291680), prominent cardinal of Rome, with Nini's arms at head. Contemporary vellum with colorful paint markings suggesting the front cover was once used as an artist's palette; (internally some thumbsoiling and light edgewear, one margin trimmed, otherwise good). Front pastedown inscribed in a late 17th-century hand "Julisis Romanus inventor Petrus Bartolus ." referring to the artistic partnership of Giulio Romano and Pietro Bartoli and the name, possibly owner, "Muhelis" short for Latin "Samuhelis." Verso of first set of engravings with list of 16 unrelated French words in an 18th century hand, suggesting some time in France, and a skillful pencil sketch of a figure in the left margin of the engraved title, likely dated around the same time. Rare set of bound engravings by Pietro Santi Bartoli (16151700), prolific student of the renowned French painters Jean Lemaire and Nicolas Poussin, which memorialized the frescoes in the Sala di Costantino of the Vatican Palace. Gaining recognition in the Eternal City, Bartoli was commissioned to create these plates after the monochrome frescoes by Giulo Romano (ca. 14991546) near the windows in the basamenti of the Sala di Costantino, beneath Romano's four larger frescoes. The monochrome paintings are significant for they were designed to mimic sculptural art. Bartoli's series of 12 engraved plates, including the title page, reproduced scenes from the life of Constantine and deeds of the patron Pope Clement VII (15231534). The publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (16271680), signed the engravings "Io. Iacobum de Rubeis" and was known for his many other history works. The dedication begins, "Illustriss. ac reverendiss. D. D. Iacobo Ninio Senensi S. D. N. Alexandri VII Pontificij cubiculi praefecto ." suggesting that the engravings were first published before Giacomo Filippo Nini was created cardinal in 1664, but after Pope Alexander VII ascended to the papacy in 1655 (and died 1667). The bound engravings remain rare; this is a remarkable copy with its ample artistic interest beyond the etchings: a near contemporary marginal sketch of figure in contrapposto and an utmost unique binding.

Small frieze style copper engraving depicting 3 military figures wearied after a battle. Perhaps one of a series? There is a rust or faded ink mark to image above…titles left hand side and 3 light old stains (small) on the right. The reverse has two letter in a 17th century hand "P & S" left and right of a vertical crease line this line or lettering isn't noticed or visible from the front. The image is a deep and clear strike a paper restorer would be able to remove the mark. Measures: 12.5 x 36 cm. Guaranteed genuine *NOTE. From the British Museum example. The print represents the 'Roman soldiers sleeping and resting after the capture of Carthage'.
