Perciò la sua figura viene qui restituita, nella sua rivalutata importanza, alla memoria storica e il tutto a partire da un meraviglioso ritratto a olio su tela (in copertina), fortuitamente ritrovato, che è stato solo il primo passo compiuto per sottrarre all'oblio una quantità d'informazioni altrimenti impensabile: dalla storia dell'oboe a quella del mecenatismo musicale, la condizione sociale dei musicisti, le loro consuetudini professionali, il pensiero sull'arte dei suoni e così via.
