Excerpt from Preface: "This is the first volume to be published by the Record Society which deals specifically with the affairs of the posts at the Bottom of the Bay--the Southern Department as it was later called. The Hudson's Bay Company was founded in 1670 as a fur trading company. HBC once controlled a commercial monopoly throughout the entirety of Rupert's Land, a territory expressly formed for HBC's monopoly. Rupert's Land also comprised the Hudson Bay drainage basin. The Canadian government gained control of Rupert's Land in 1870 following negotiations with HBC. HBC is still in business to this day as Canada's largest and oldest corporation. Today, HBC is commonly referred to as "The Bay" and has many brick-and-mortar retail stores as well as an online store. HBC has since changed its product line to reflect current interests, and as of 2023, no longer sells animal fur products.
