He served through the Civil War in the New York Cavalry, and was twice taken prisoner by the Confederates. After the war he continued his adventures, once being captured by hostile Indians in the Wyoming Territory and managing to escape with his life. "In 1876 he went on horseback from Boston to San Francisco, was captured by hostile Indians in Wyoming Territory and escaped.
