From the publisher: "Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden began photographing the male nude in the early 1890s in Taormina, a hillside town on the northeast coast of Sicily. Following his death in 1931, von Gloeden's collection of over three thousand glass plate negatives was left to his longtime friend and model, Pancrazio Bucini. When Mussolini's fascists entered Taormina in 1936, the negatives were seized and Bucini was accused of 'keeping pornography.' Though Bucini was acquitted, the negatives were not returned until after World War II-few of the plates survived." NOTE: Cover image of our book differs from the stock image. Photos sent on request.

His models were from the Mediterranean region and posed in classical compositions. The Italian fascists destroyed much of his work. First published in French in 1975. Maroon clothbound hardcover with silver lettering to the spine in photographically illustrated dj. 105 pages; 45 b&w photographic plates reproduced in color; 9.25 x 9.25 inches. Condition: Near Fine with a light bump to one tip and a touch of wear to the heel and crown in a Very Good dust jacket with tanning to the edges, now protected by a mylar cover. Set Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 4to. Four wrappered volumes housed in a slipcase. Noticeable bumping and creasing to spine ends. Considerable sunning to spines and joints. Light creasing to corners of wrappers. Some spotting to wrappers of first and third volumes. Small patches of soiling, likely from fingerprints, to first and third volumes in area surrounding joints. Signifigant rubbing to slipcase. Moderate uneven darkening to slipcase. Starting and exposed glue to bottom and top panels of slipcase, which could easily be fixed with glue. VG in wrappers in VG slipcase.
