Mary Baker Eddy (July 16, 1821 - December 3, 1910) established the Church of Christ, Scientist, as a Christian denomination and worldwide movement of spiritual healers. She wrote and published the movement's textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and 15 other books. She started several weekly and monthly magazines-the Christian Science Sentinel, The Christian Science Journal, and The Herald of Christian Science-that feature articles on Christian Science practice and verified testimonies of healing. In 1908, at the age of 87, she founded The Christian Science Monitor, a global newspaper that has won seven Pulitzer Prizes. Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures has been a best seller for decades, and was selected as one of the "75 Books By Women Whose Words Have Changed The World," by the Women's National Book Association. In 1995 Eddy was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. In 2002, The Mary Baker Eddy Library opened its doors, giving the public access to one of the largest collections about an American woman. Early life: Bow, New Hampshire: Family: Eddy was born Mary Morse Baker in a farmhouse in Bow, New Hampshire to farmer Mark Baker (d. 1865) and his wife Abigail Barnard Baker, nee Ambrose (d. 1849). Eddy was the youngest of the Bakers' six children: boys Samuel Dow (1808), Albert (1810), and George Sullivan (1812), followed by girls Abigail Barnard (1816), Martha Smith (1819), and Mary Morse (1821). Mark Baker was a strongly religious man from a Protestant Congregationalist background, a firm believer in the final judgment and eternal damnation, according to Eddy. McClure's magazine published a series of articles in 1907 that were highly critical of Eddy, stating that Baker's home library consisted of the Bible-though Eddy responded that this was untrue and that her father had been an avid reader. Eddy wrote that her father had been a justice of the peace at one point and a chaplain of the New Hampshire State Militia. He developed a reputation locally for being disputatious; one neighbor described him as "[a] tiger for a temper and always in a row."McClure's reported several similar stories from neighbors, including that he once killed a crow with his walking stick for violating the Sabbath. The magazine described him as a supporter of slavery and alleged that he had been pleased to hear about Abraham Lincoln's death. Eddy responded that Baker had been a "strong believer in States' rights, but slavery he regarded as a great sin." The Baker children inherited their father's temper, according to McClure's; they also inherited his good looks, and Eddy became known as the village beauty. Life was nevertheless spartan and repetitive. Every day began with lengthy prayer and continued with hard work. The only rest day was the Sabbath. Eddy separated from her second husband Daniel Patterson, after which she boarded for four years with several families in Lynn, Amesbury, and elsewhere. Frank Podmore wrote: But she was never able to stay long in one family. She quarrelled successively with all her hostesses, and her departure from the house was heralded on two or three occasions by a violent scene. Her friends during these years were generally Spiritualists; she seems to have professed herself a Spiritualist, and to have taken part in seances. She was occasionally entranced, and had received "spirit communications" from her deceased brother Albert. Her first advertisement as a healer appeared in 1868, in the Spiritualist paper, The Banner of Light. During these years she carried about with her a copy of one of Quimby's manuscripts giving an abstract of his philosophy. This manuscript she permitted some of her pupils to copy.Eddy clearly distinguished Christian Science from Spiritualism in a chapter in Science and Health entitled Christian Science versus Spiritual Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Christian Science develops its theology and its healing method in Science and Health and defines God as incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love. Eddy saw Jesus' healing work as a divinely natural and repeatable science. According to Stephen Gottschalk, Eddy saw the healing ministry of Christian Science as helping to rouse Christians to the great promise of restoring the power of the original Gospel. Science and Health encapsulates the teachings of Christian Science and adherents often call it their textbook.First edition. Science And Health by Mary Baker Glover. Published by Christian Scie.

Emerging from a period of intellectual and spiritual ferment, this book boldly challenges conventional understandings of science, theology, and the human experience. The author contends that the prevailing materialistic worldview, which attributes physical effects to physical causes, is fundamentally flawed. Instead, they propose a metaphysical framework that posits God, or Divine Intelligence, as the sole cause and creator. This book delves into profound questions about the nature of reality, the relationship between mind and matter, and the true essence of humanity. It critiques established systems of thought, including traditional medicine and religious dogma, arguing that they perpetuate erroneous beliefs about sickness, sin, and mortality. The author presents a revolutionary approach to healing and spiritual growth, emphasizing the power of understanding divine principles rather than relying on material methods or blind faith. With unwavering conviction, they assert that grasping the scientific principles of being can liberate individuals from suffering and reveal the path to harmony and immortality. This book's insights offer a transformative perspective on human existence, urging readers to reconsider their assumptions about life, health, and the boundless possibilities that lie within. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Excellent question and one I will endeavor to answer here. Since it is our goal to find and reprint spiritual classics on the verge of falling into the vast abyss, we came upon reference to this work while reading "Lifting the Veil" by Lillian Dewaters, and the following is quoted verbatim from "The Sickle" by William W. Walter, during a discussion on the understanding of Christian Science, excerpted from pages 127-129, 1918 edition. Recently there has arisen a misunderstanding among the students of Christian Science, regarding the correctness of the early editions of "Science and Health, with key to the Scriptures." Some maintain that merely reading the early editions once gave them a much greater depth of understanding, and consequently greater healing power than years of study spent upon the later editions. Others maintain that Christian Science, in its complete purity, is not to be found in the early editions, and further state that Mrs. Eddy later repudiated these early editions as being incorrect in Principle. Mrs. Eddy's own words ought to be the best authority on this question. She wrote, page 55, "Retrospection and Introspection," under the chapter heading of "The Precious Volume"-"The first edition of my most important work, Science and Health, containing the complete statement of Christian Science, the term employed by me to express the Divine, or spiritual Science of Mind-healing was published in 1875." The statement, "the first edition of my most important work, Science and Health, containing the complete statement of Christian Science'' was undoubtedly written in 1891, or sixteen years after: the publishing of the first edition. Thus we see that after sixteen years of teaching, writing and practice Mrs. Eddy still maintained that the first edition was "The Precious Volume" and the one that contained "the complete statement of Christian Science" A Gnostic Audio Selection, includes free access to streaming audio book.
