Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Dust Jacket Included. English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket).; 32 x 25 cm.; 1.5 kg.; 168 pages with colour and black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The dust jacket shows edge wear, scuffs and scratches and is protected with a clearcover. Interior…with minor signs of wear, except for a pen written dedication and signature on title page.; The varied landscape of the Indian subcontinent offered a myriad subjects to British artists with an eye for the beauties of nature and architecture. This volume focuses on the lives and landscapes of selected artists from differing backgrounds over a time-span of one and a half centuries. From the 1760s onwards, soldiers and civilians in the East India Company's service, free merchants, and professional artists with a zest for adventure made pictorial observations of the country in a range of media. Works by well-known artists such as William Hodges, the Daniells, George Chinnery, Charles D'Oyly, William Simpson, and Albert Goodwin, besides lesser known artists such as Francis Swain Ward, Ezekiel Barton, Thomas Cussans, Richard Barron, and George Landseer are included in the articles. Many of them came with an eye for the picturesque. They were enthralled by the exotic palaces, dramatic hill-top fortresses, exquisite carvings and decorations of the temples and mosques, the elegance of European-style buildings in the cities, and the charms and wonders of the countryside and mountain regions. This tradition of British landscape art in India is also important as it provides a historic visual record of numerous places, thus enriching our knowledge of the monuments and topography of the country in the age before photography. Many artists also wrote about the subjects they were drawing or painting. Some kept journals or wrote letters that have survived, thus further enhancing our understanding of their often colourful and eventful lives. The pictures are a testimony of their artistic interests and skill, while the writings convey not only a sense of dedication to their art, but also their admiration for the endless aspects of Indian landscape.
