Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict Studies, Security, grade: A-, Utrecht University (Roosevelt Academy), course: Security in the Post-Cold War Era, language: English, abstract: Rare earth metals are chemical elements which are widely unknown to the general public but nevertheless can be found in everyday life. They are critical components of digital cameras, rechargeable batteries and magnets, of surgical lasers, polishing powders and military tanks. Even though their name suggests differently, they are not specifically rare but they often only exist in small deposits scattered over the globe which makes mining often fairly unprofitable. From 1986 onwards China established itself as the biggest producer of rare earth metals with by 2010 supplying 97% of world demand (Humphries, 2011, p. 13). In the past five years prices have been seen to increase tremendously and during the Senkaku boat collision incident, China imposed a trade embargo for rare earth metals against its opponent Japan. The question is to what extent China is going to use its dominant position in the future, specifically in regard to one of the biggest rare earth metal consumer, the United States. In the following the question whether China's monopoly is indeed a serious threat to U.S. security will be answered. Therefore, first a detailed definition of rare earth metals and their applications and a historical overview will be given. Thereupon, it will be shown that China's monopoly is indeed a security issue by a review of the relevant body of security literature, specifically the Copenhagen school approach. Afterwards the possible solutions will be examined.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: A (entspricht 1), Utrecht University (Roosevelt Academy), course: Music in Context, language: English, abstract: Even persons who describe themselves as Schubert lovers may be surprised by the fact that the master of Lieder Franz Schubert (1797-1828) also composed up to 21 works for the stage. Why these pieces are almost forgotten today, can be answered rather easily. From the twelve pieces which he finished, only four have been performed in his life time and were also not very successful. But also today, the pieces can be scarcely found on the playing list of theatres, even in Germany and Austria. Literature often offers the possible explanation that the used libretti were of bad quality and Schubert, the 'lyricist' (Partsch 20), was not able of supplying opera dramatics. The simplification that this assumption contains will be explained, especially in regard to the problematic history of German opera itself.…

He was born on 26 July 1869 in Hanover as the first of two children of the Roman Catholic bailiff Karl Lies and his wife Margaretha Louisa Brand. Already during his college years in Cologne, he started composing several piano and organ pieces. After college, he entered the conservatoire of Cologne and was taught composition and conducting by prof. Franz Wüllner, a well-known German composer and conductor (Dohr). Furthermore, he had classes in music theory with Gustav Jensen, piano with Otto Klauwell and score reading with conductor Eduard Mertke. In his leaving certificate, Franz Wüllner wrote about him: 'He has proven to be highly ambitious and gifted and developed to a splendid musician during his study period.'1 This statement sounds especially comprehensible if one considers that Lies composed during his studies among others one cantata, various pieces for piano en two symphonies of which he performed parts in his final exam. Apart from that, one can unfortunately not learn much more about his study period because the historical city archive of Cologne which probably contained some material collapsed two years ago.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Tourism Geography, grade: A, Utrecht University (Roosevelt Academy), language: English, abstract: That tourism flows pollute the local culture1 and degrade the authenticity of a location (Desforges 517-518) has almost become a truism. In fact, as Coleman and Crang observe such critiques are as old as tourism itself (qtd. in Desforges 522-524) and are linked up with a wrong understanding of places - at least from a human geographical point of view. If detractors state that a locality has become 'inauthentic' under touristic influence than in reverse it must have been 'authentic', meaning genuine, unaffected and stable, before travelers visited it and brought their own culture. In contrast there is basically no place which developed without the influence of travelers. As Doreen Massey notes a place is not the way it is because of internal characteristics but because of global linkages (qtd. in Crang 45-49) and as Desforges adds 'tourism and travel are merely a new form of interconnection between places' (523). For instance the Dutch city Middelburg gained some of its today's distinctive appearance and character by the slave trade and the resulting prosperity some hundred years ago (Encyclopædia Britannica). As Greenwood concludes 'some of what we see as destruction is construction' (182). However, distinctive local traditions like certain ceremonies can change or even lose not only their original meaning but also the sense for residents under the influence of mass tourism (Hall and Page 122; Greenwood 181-182). One example for such a change of meaning can be seen in the development of the wine festivals in the Palatinate in Germany which will be examined later.…

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: A, Utrecht University, language: English, abstract: When the United States housing bubble collapsed in 2007 and triggered a global financial crisis this also did not leave one of the economically strongest country in Europe unaffected. Amongst other, the insolvency of Lehman Brothers (and others) led to a liquidity shortage in German major banks like the Hypo Real Estate (Müller) and the BAA-AAA-spread increased. In the following, the performance of Germany during the global crisis from 2006 to 2010 will be examined in the IS/LM framework and show how the financial and monetary sector reacted.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Theater Studies, Dance, grade: A-, Utrecht University, course: Topics in Theatre and Media Studies, language: English, abstract: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (RHPS), a film by Richard O'Brien, is probably the longest-running release in the history of moving picture with regular screenings (The Official Fan Site) since its release in 1975. Apart from that, also the screenings itself have a notorious tradition as most of them involve what is called by their fans audience participation. That means that the spectators are expected to actively involve in the story of the film by for example dressing up like one of the characters and calling responses to the screen and by that breaking with the traditional conventions of cinema etiquettes.Till now, research mainly investigated active audience participation as part of the so-called Rocky Horror cult but it was hardly ever studied as a phenomenon of its own taking into account theories about reception process, emotion theory and tension, a gap which this paper tries to fill. After all, active audience participation is not limited to The Rocky Horror Picture Show but can also be found in a few other films and this research can therefore also give implications for the perception and reception of films like The Room (2003) or Hedwig (2001) which screenings also involve active audience participation. The goal of this research is therefore to historically, theoretically, analytically and empirically explore and categorize the phenomenon of active audience participation in the case of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Specifically, it will test the hypothesis that especially for fans the screenings become a form of an event where the film itself is of secondary importance and show that active audience participation has to be considered as being part of a wider tension concept. In particular, the research will focus on three main research questions on which the structure of this paper is based. After explaining the theoretical framework which includes definitions for the used terms and then the methodology, the first question, when, how and why the active audience participation in The Rocky Horror Picture Show evolved, will be answered. Thereafter, the function and importance of this active audience participation for the fans will be analysed. Thirdly, it will be examined to what extent active audience participation influences the perception and experience of first-time viewers of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. At the end, a short summary, general conclusions and a short discussion with suggestions for further research will be given.…

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: A entstricht 1, Utrecht University (University College Roosevelt), language: English, abstract: In the past decade, the historically homogeneous South Korean society has seen an increase in immigration. While the majority of immigrants still come from other Asian countries, the immigration of Anglophone immigrants is especially remarkable. Most of them are working as English teachers in public and private Korean education institution. The essay at hand traces the motivations of these immigrants and the role of the government by means of literature research. Furthermore, a short survey has been conducted to try to answer the question how well these Western immigrants are integrated in the Korean. Even though South Korea is slowly transforming into a multicultural society, integration still an issue that the government did not yet address thoroughly.…

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: 7.5, University of Amsterdam (CEDLA), course: Brazil: Democracy, Citizenship and Sustainable Development, language: English, abstract: Since almost 19 months, Brazil has a new president: Dilma Rousseff, the first woman to take office and the first time that the president is not a candidate from the opposition to the former government. Her success is mainly attributed to the fact that Dilma, Lula da Silva'sformer cabinet chef, was advertised as 'candidate of the Lulism' (de Carvalho Cruz Pires, 2011, p. 1) who could not run a third consecutive time himself due to legislation ('Lula da Silva', 2011). Reports supposed first that Dilma would merely be an 'interim president' till Lula could run again for elections in 2014 (Souza, 2011, p. 87). But soon, Dilma reached popularity rates of 77% which is even higher than the rates of Lula in his second year ofpresidency (Comenalli, 2012) who once has been called 'the most popular politician on earth' by Barack Obama ('Obama: Lula is', 2009). Even though several reports point out that while essentially sticking to the main points of her predecessor (Sader 2011, Löwy 2012) Dilma managed to step out of Lula's shadow (Bryson 2011). However, a thorough analysis of her first 19 months is still missing. By examining her stand to various global issues and herdiplomatic strategy, the following will discuss Dilma's role in foreign affairs, especially her standpoint in comparison to her predecessor Lula. The retrospective on Lula is especially important when considering the statement of Richard Bourne who points out that in the presidential constitutional republic of Brazil, its citizens align themselves much more with a candidate than with a party (2008, p.213). Before going into achievements and plans in foreign policy, a short historical overview of Dilma's political career and her visions, both nationally and internationally, will be given. Neither the comparison nor the review of Dilma's foreign policy agenda is meant to be all-encompassing but should rather be seen as an exploration of Dilma's first 19 months as President with the aim to answer the question what other nations can expect from Dilma for the rest of her term.…

They all used it as an inspiration the biblical story of unrighteous King Belshazzar and the writing on the wall. However, there are even older usages of this dramatic topic of the Old Testament. One of it is the liturgical drama Ludus Danielis (The Play of Daniel) from Beauvais. This essay will attempt to review the main literature centered on Ludus Danielis Belouacensis to gain an understanding of the importance of this liturgical drama considering particularly the claim to be a medieval opera . Furthermore it will give special attention to the problem of the dating with drawing Hilarius Historia de Daniel Representanda into account. …

Even though South Korea is slowly transforming into a multicultural society, integration still an issue that the government did not yet address thoroughly. 24 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Middle- and South America, grade: 7.5, University of Amsterdam (CEDLA), course: Brazil: Democracy, Citizenship and Sustainable Development, language: English, abstract: Since almost 19 months, Brazil has a new president: Dilma Rousseff, the first woman to take office and the first time that the president is not a candidate from the opposition to the former government. Neither the comparison nor the review of Dilma's foreign policy agenda is meant to be all-encompassing but should rather be seen as an exploration of Dilma's first 19 months as President with the aim to answer the question what other nations can expect from Dilma for the rest of her term. 28 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Theater Studies, Dance, grade: A-, Utrecht University, course: Topics in Theatre and Media Studies, language: English, abstract: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (RHPS), a film by Richard O'Brien, is probably the longest-running release in the history of moving picture with regular screenings (The Official Fan Site) since its release in 1975. At the end, a short summary, general conclusions and a short discussion with suggestions for further research will be given. 32 pp. Englisch.…

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: A (entspricht 1), Utrecht University (Roosevelt Academy), course: Music in Context, language: English, abstract: That failure is not always caused by a lack of talent but rather a lack of fortune and false modesty can be seen exemplary in the life of the Dutch-German composer Karl [Carl] Otto Lies. In his leaving certificate, Franz Wüllner wrote about him: ¿He has proven to be highly ambitious and gifted and developed to a splendid musician during his study period.¿1 This statement sounds especially comprehensible if one considers that Lies composed during his studies among others one cantata, various pieces for piano en two symphonies of which he performed parts in his final exam. Apart from that, one can unfortunately not learn much more about his study period because the historical city archive of Cologne which probably contained some material collapsed two years ago.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch. …

Neuware -Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Tourism Geography, grade: A, Utrecht University (Roosevelt Academy), language: English, abstract: That tourism flows pollute the local culture1 and degrade the authenticity of a location (Desforges 517-518) has almost become a truism. In fact, as Coleman and Crang observe such critiques are as old as tourism itself (qtd. in Desforges 522-524) and are linked up with a wrong understanding of places ¿ at least from a human geographical point of view. If detractors state that a locality has become ¿inauthentic¿ under touristic influence than in reverse it must have been ¿authentic¿, meaning genuine, unaffected and stable, before travelers visited it and brought their own culture. In contrast there is basically no place which developed without the influence of travelers. As Doreen Massey notes a place is not the way it is because of internal characteristics but because of global linkages (qtd. in Crang 45-49) and as Desforges adds ¿tourism and travel are merely a new form of interconnection between places¿ (523). For instance the Dutch city Middelburg gained some of its today's distinctive appearance and character by the slave trade and the resulting prosperity some hundred years ago (Encyclopædia Britannica). As Greenwood concludes ¿some of what we see as destruction is construction¿ (182). However, distinctive local traditions like certain ceremonies can change or even lose not only their original meaning but also the sense for residents under the influence of mass tourism (Hall and Page 122; Greenwood 181-182). One example for such a change of meaning can be seen in the development of the wine festivals in the Palatinate in Germany which will be examined later.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.…
