La Alfiyyah d'Ibnou-Malik, 1888). Établi en Afrique du Nord puis au Moyen-Orient, il mena parallèlement des activités commerciales, notamment dans le Golfe persique et à Oman, où il fit du commerce d'armes. Ses écrits révèlent un souci constant de renforcer l'influence française face à la puissance britannique, ce qui lui valut la réputation d'agent d'influence officieux. Il mourut à Mascate en 1909, léguant sa riche bibliothèque arabe à l'Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth.
