A powerful remembrance of the lessons and legacy of Jan Karski, who risked his life to share the truth with the world-and a cautionary tale for our times.Richly illustrated with stills from the black-and-white film adaptation of the acclaimed stage play, Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski tells the story of World War II hero, Holocaust witness, and Georgetown University professor Jan Karski. A messenger of truth, Karski risked his life to carry his harrowing reports of the Holocaust from war-torn Poland to the Allied nations and, ultimately, the Oval Office, only to be ignored and disbelieved. Despite the West's unwillingness to act, Karski continued to tell others about the atrocities he saw, and, after a period of silence, would do so for the remainder of his life. This play carries forward his legacy of bearing witness so that future generations might be inspired to follow his example and "shake the conscience of the world."Accompanying the text of the stage play in this volume are essays and conversations from leading diplomats, thinkers, artists, and writers who reckon with Karski's legacy, including Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, award-winning author Aminatta Forna, best-selling author Azar Nafisi, President Emeritus of Georgetown Leo J. O'Donovan, SJ, Ambassador Samantha Power, Ambassador Cynthia P. Schneider, historian Timothy Snyder, Academy Award nominated actor David Strathairn, and best-selling author Deborah Tannen.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xiii, [1], 171, [7] pages. Illustrations. References. Further Reading. Related bookmark laid in. With contributions from Madeleine Albright, Stuart Eizenstat, Samantha Power, and Deborah Tannen. This play was made into a feature film starring Academy Award Nominated Actor David Strathairn. Jan Karski (born Jan Kozielewski, 24 June 1914 - 13 July 2000) was a Polish soldier, resistance-fighter, and diplomat during WWII. In November 1939 Karski was among POWs bound for a camp in the General Government zone, a part of Poland that had not been fully incorporated into the Third Reich. He escaped. He acted as a courier in 1940-1943 to the Polish government-in-exile and to it's Allies about the situation in German-occupied Poland. He reported about the state of Poland, its many competing resistance factions, and about Germany's destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto and its operation of extermination camps on Polish soil that were murdering Jews, Poles, and others. Emigrating to the United States after the war, Karski completed a doctorate and taught for decades at Georgetown University in international relations and Polish history. He lived in Washington, D.C., until the end of his life. Karski did not speak publicly about his wartime missions until 1981 when he was invited as a speaker to a conference on the liberation of the camps. Karski was featured in Lanzmann's film Shoah, about the Holocaust, based on interviews with Jewish and Polish survivors. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Karski was honored by the Polish government, other European nations, and the US for his wartime role. In April 2014, The Lab began its profound journey to share the incredible story of Jan Karski as part of the Centennial Celebration of his birth. In Georgetown's Gaston Hall, amidst political and humanitarian leaders, hundreds of Karski's former students and colleagues gathered. Academy Award Nominated actor David Strathairn, along with a group of Georgetown students, presented a staged reading. The performance showcased the first version of Clark Young and Derek Goldman's play, highlighting the story of the Polish diplomat/ renowned Georgetown Professor who bravely risked his life to bring evidence of the Holocaust to Western governments during WWII. Since then the play has evolved into an internationally-celebrated solo performance that has been performed at leading theaters in Chicago, Washington DC, and Berkeley as well as in London, Spain, and four cities in Poland, all with Strathairn in the role that he originated. A writer and teacher based in Brooklyn, Clark Young co-created every iteration of "Remember This" from Warsaw and New York City to London and Washington DC. Clark graduated from Georgetown University, and received his Master's from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where he was recognized for academic excellence in the field of Performance Studies. Dr. Derek Goldman is an award-winning international stage director, playwright, producer, festival director, adapter/ deviser, curator, and published scholar. He serves as Artistic and Executive Director of The Laboratory for Global Performance & Politics (The Lab), which he co-founded in 2012 with Ambassador Cynthia Schneider with a mission "to humanize global politics through performance." Under his leadership, The Lab has grown into a unique organization that is both a global destination for students and an expansive network of global collaborators, and is recognized for its distinctive thought-leadership and innovation at the intersection of performance, politics, education, and social justice. He is Professor of Theater and Performance Studies at Georgetown with a joint appointment in the School of Foreign Service as Professor of Global Performance, Culture and Politics. In nineteen years at Georgetown, he has also served as Chair of the Department of Performing Arts and Director of the Theater & Performance Studies Program, and for a decade as Artistic Director of the Davis Performing Arts Center. He is director and co-author (with his former student Clark Young) of the celebrated play "Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski, (published as the centerpiece of a special volume by Georgetown University Press). The play was created by The Lab and stars Oscar-Nominated actor David Strathairn, and has been performed to great acclaim Off-Broadway and at leading theaters such as DC's Shakespeare Theater Company, Berkeley Repertory, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, as well as performances in the UK, Spain, 4 cities in Poland, and more. He also co-directed and co-authored the new feature film version (Remember This) which has received awards at numerous festivals and aired nationally on PBS Great Performances.
