After the Germans invaded Norway in 1940, Goldschmidt, who was Jewish, was arrested and about to be deported to Auschwitz when colleagues convinced the Germans that his scientific expertise was essential to the state. Goldschmidt was released, and he fled to Sweden and then to Britain where he provided information German use of raw materials and production of heavy water.
