Organized through a non-hierarchical editorial model with rotating groups of artists, writers, and filmmakers, the publication operated outside the structures of the mainstream art world. Editorial meetings took place across downtown New York loft spaces from the late 1970s through the early 1990s, grounding the project within artist-run networks rather than institutional frameworks. Issue 16 turns to film, video, and emerging media at a critical moment of technological and cultural transition. As video became increasingly accessible, the publication foregrounds women not as subjects of representation, but as producers, editors, and distributors of moving image culture—advancing media as both an artistic and political tool. Contributors include Lizzie Borden, Su Friedrich, Coco Fusco, Yvonne Rainer, and Michelle Wallace, among others, reflecting a wide range of positions across experimental film, video, criticism, and activist media. The issue brings together voices shaped by differing cultural backgrounds, political commitments, and working conditions, emphasizing media as a site of both production and lived experience. Notably includes material related to Lizzie Borden's Born in Flames, a landmark feminist work that embodies the decentralized, collective ethos articulated throughout the publication.
